I joined this group about a week ago and have looked at a lot of posts. Glad I joined! Seems a lot better then Lincoln Forums...Can't get responses there.

I have a 2000 LS8 and am looking to upgrade both to a double din and the speakers. I’m looking at the DPX503 by Kenwood. I have had screens in other vehicles (2003 Avalanche Z-71) but think I'm just going to keep it easy this time. This kenwood is nice since the color can be matched to the factory green.

I have seen many double din installs on this site. For those of you who did do the double din install and did not fabricate your own kit I was Just wondering which kit will match the rest of the black plastic the best? I don't want it to look all that different as far as the color and texture goes.

One other thing, the speakers have been abused in the past....I need to upgrade bad! Any suggestions on some good 6x8's? I would like some GOOD bass...don't really want to put my subs in the trunk. Not too expensive either :)

Here is the link for the Kenwood unit and one for the kit I was looking at.

first link is the radio

second is the front and rear components

third is the 6 x 9s

and 4th is the amp to run them.

run the fronts at 2 ohms and the rears at 4 ohms and ur good. might wanna high pass them if you plan on not blowing them as you wont b able to play them too loud full range without smelling burnt coils after a few minutes.

if you want some good bass get a sub, if you dont want to then shutup and dont have bass.also if you want quality stuff pay the price if not get some pyle or pyramid speakers and shutup.

Cool, that will be the kit I will go with....thanks joegr and Fred G.

DJKNOWLEGE, those speakers are nice. Whats with the attitude man? I have subs (JL Audio W7) but don't want to rattle the damn car to death and have to deal with all the annoying rattling. That would be why I asked for door speakers with the most bass....not b/c i didn't think that subs would be the best choice for bass. But thanks for the links...that site is good.

no attitude....thats just for people who always try to half ass it lol....why dont u just dynamat the trunk. pretty much any car has some rattle goin on when you put in some subs.

But then there goes a third to half of your trunk space unless you put then where the spare tire is.

Another option would be to put in subs like the factory subs. They are in the rear deck and don't take up much trunk space at all.

jl makes a nice 8 inch sub that can be in open air so with a nice custom mount that would be nice in the rear deck

Yeah, getting better subs in for the stock subs is on my lists. Although those stock subs sound pretty good.

I had a question. The THX sound system in the gen 2. What makes it what it is, the head unit or speakers or both combined? Like if you upgrade speakers but leave the Stock nav head unit, will you lose that THX quality? Or no cause you still have the THX head unit?

That sounds interested. I'll go re search that up.

found this guy on ebay who does pretty nice work when it comes to boxes. im buying a box from him that is 13.5 inches tall, 32 inches wide and some 20 or more inches deep so that it can actually be small enough and wide enough to fit between the strut mounts in the trunk and under the rear speakers and slide back enough to still have trunk space. AND IT IS STILL BIG ENOUGH TO GIVE ME 2 FT PER CUBIC FOOT TUNED AT 34 HZ!!! but for those who dont want to lose any trunk space you cud ask him to build you a box to specs and sunthin real small so you dont lose out on space or sound!!

just get a decent 10 or 12 and you will still have some trunk space....after all, whats an ls without some nice beats

What about a box enclosure that goes in the lid for the spare tires but small enough to allow you to keep the spare in there and maybe have like not hydrolic rods on the sides to hold it up iinstead of having that little clip hold it up.

It's the whole system (head unit, external amplifiers, speakers, and sub-woofers) working together. Change any one item, and you will change the sound. Making it better or worse is a matter of opinion, and the only opinion that should really count is the owner of the car. In any event, any changes will make it no longer "THX certified."

Just thought I'd give a little input on this...I got a 2004 just so you know.

Right now I'm running Polk MMC570s in all my doors, which are the 5x7 Momos that aren't made anymore. I'll bet the the Mobile Monitors sound fantastic. I would say the Polks would definitely be good speakers, especially for their prices. I'm still running stock everything on the rear deck as well as the factory head unit. It's the 6 disc changer like you find in a lot of other Fords...

As for an amp, I'm running an OLD PPI Ax400 for my door speakers. I bought it entirely for the sound quality, which is incredible. The only problem with most old school PPI stuff is that, in most cases, they didn't have built in crossovers (the Ax400 does, but that's the only Art series amp that I know of that does) and they only take low level RCA inputs. So for me that resulted in a pretty convoluted install...but it still works well enough.

As for the sub, I'm currently running a Digital Designs 1508 powered by a JBL BPX500.1. The 1508 is probably the best 8 you can buy, even over the W7. The only problem is that they need a lot of power (I've got an older one that needs either 350 or 450 watts, the newer ones are rated at 500 watts RMS) and a big box. My one 8 is in 1.25 cu. ft. tuned to 40ish hertz. It hits hard though. And sounds pretty damn good. Later this month I'll be putting in two Peerless XXLS 10CWs, which are more SQ oriented than anything, so I'll have to see how it goes.

Sorry 'bout the long post...

Oh yeah, makes sense. Thanks

OK here's my 2¢

I'm rockin' Alpine type R 6.5" in all 4 doors powered by an Alpine MRP-F450
An Alpine type R 12" sealed in 1.0cf enclosure powered by an oldschool Alpine MRV-T757 and a Rockford 1.0 farad cap
And for the deck I've got an Alpine IVA-W200 with ipod hookup and bypass to watch movies while in motion.

If I had to do it again I would put components in the fronts with the tweeter mounted near the A-pillar. My sound stage seems too low with the speakers in the lower doors. It may help to fill the rear deck with some 6x9's.... Haven't gotten around to it yet.

A lotta nice setups. Thats a nice sup Paca161, the DD. Any one heard snail shell box's? The place I buy my audio stuff from had a demo car with two 8 inch DD's with 300 watts rms in a snail shell box and that things insane! Lound and had nice SQ. I think its in the high 130's on the TL. Whats your definition of "expensive"? For almost any decent pair of mids you'll pay atleast 100 and you'll need 3 sets. Unless Gen 1 are different with the rear deck. I don't see you getting nice amounts of bass outta your mids unless you lower the high pass frequency on your head unit, but then you really risk blowin a speaker. Buy and 8" sub

Thanks for all the advice guys! I'm liking the Infinity Kapas....I have read mixed things about whether they need a amp or if you can just run them off a headunit. What do you think? I know most of you are running a amp on your door speakers but you don't really have too do you?

I'm thinking I may just throw a damn sub in the trunk now....I have a ported 10in JL W6 and a W7 laying in the garage. Think I will go with the 10 in, just to save on space. Wish I hadn't sold my amps!

If you use an amp for the door speakers you will want to run new speaker wires.
Getting up through the center posts and into the back doors is not too much trouble but for the front there's so much stuff to move out of the way to get the wires through the pillar that I ran them out the doors through the wire harness but then ran them outside the pillar and taped the wires over with electrical tape.
Worked good and I haven't had any problems.

of course you dont have to have an amp to drive them, however a speaker of that level does operate a hell of a lot better with plenty of power, with out an amp you will probably have to turn the radio up too far to get the sound you want and push the head unit into the range where it will distort, i would go with the reference series if you dont want to run an amp with them as the parts of the speaker are lighter and sound better with less power.

BTW Kappa Perfects, amazing!

Ok, that's what i was wondering....reference or the kapas. I'll go with the reference since i don't want to use a amp.

I think I'm going to go with the KENWOOD DPX503...what wiring kit/harness do i need for the ls? Been looking around and can't figure it out.

PAC SWI-JACK: Does this work well for those of you who have installed it? I've read that with some vehicles you are not able to use all buttons and that it can be sluggish.
