New tires

I'm not excited about anything right now. I just disagree with some (most) of your generalized statements.

That is a general statement that is not always true. Evidently you missed (or ignored) me saying this:

Again... get the soft tires hot enough... and rubber will peel off and ball up. It will be like driving on marbles (or small ball bearings. Take your pick.

So yes... tires CAN be too soft.
 
Yea well those Conti are actually pretty soft, only 40 points harder in the rating than my sumitomos. I just assumed they were much harder cause you said they lasted so long, but actually that's only 10k more than the sumitomos so that lines up.

I guess I was arguing with you about a very small difference, ha, sorry man. This ones on me. I agree the Conti is also an excellent tire for this car. Those Dunlop's must've been really soft to melt that fast, kinda like those Michelins i was looking at initially. In hindsight they would been way overkill for this car so I'm glad I saved a few bucks with the sumitomos. Haven't broke them loose yet!
 
I wouldn't consider the Conti's treadwear rating of 560 soft. Especially since I get 70k out of them.

Now if you wanna talk about a hard tire that is junk..
that would be the Goodyear Assurance Triple tread. Their treadwear rating is (was) 700.

I had those on my Panther body... and at 70mph on a rainy day... I could stomp the gas and put the car sideways. Tire was wayyy too hard.
 
I guess it's really mid-range rather than soft, but regardless, softer grips better as you pointed out with the 700 rating example above and at the end of the day that's all I was really trying to say.
 
I've said this before ...don't mean to beat a dead horse ...but besides the gripping capabilities of a good tire ....tires in general take on 70% of the cars impact when it comes to suspension...with that in mind make sure tires are inflated properly and to OEM spec
 
Reading this thread is the most fun I've on this website! I've driven on both marbles and ice, both impart a helpless feeling when pushed too hard. Black Beauty (AKA Be Be) had Tiger Paws on it when Gabriel bought it, I replaced them with the Firehawks the car was born with. Both are good tires. Admittedly, I don't push Be Be as hard as I push my Escorts, I don't want to risk it, it's too special, but I do push. If you want grip, go for the wider of the tires listed on the door post. I just put 195/60R14 (and vintage ARE 6 X 14s) Tiger Paws on my one of my Escorts, they grip well enough to make me realize the sway bar bushings need replacing.
 
Have had 3 sets of Conti DWS. Worse tire ever to balance feels like im running over rocks. Tire guy said they are hard to balance sometimes. Have had 2 diff suspensions and same result after multiple roadforce balances. They got better with wear. Lasted around 30k-40k miles each. Great traction. Soso in the snow. The v6 did better.
 
first time I've ever seen anyone say little car tires were hard to balance, lol
 
Sometimes it's the experience of the person doing the balancing.

Years ago I went to a chain store owned by Sears. (NTW/NTB).

The guy was having a hard time getting one tire to balance properly.

I told him to break the tire down again... and rotate it 90 degrees on the rim.

He did... and the tire balanced perfectly.

Every now and then you will get a tire with a heavy spot.
