This time it's not my car.

A buddy of mine as a no start issue.

When he turns the key to start the car, the car does nothing. No click. No start. The gauges go blank but the needles do not sweep. The power does go away in the key position start. Dome lights or headlights do not dimmer. Moving the gear changer or putting it in neutral doesn't help either.

I told him to check the starter and/or starter solenoid. He doesn't think it's starter related. So he wont. It will go weeks with out issues. Boom, he has an issue that some how fixes it self.


Can anyone back up my claim so he will listen to me.

... Using the right key? Stuck starter solenoid? What kind of car?

I'd check in the following order:

1) Check for PATS lights - blinking rapidly = PATS problem
2) Check starter relay and wiring
3) Short terminals at the starter to see if it engages
4) If not, replace starter.

Before doing any of the above, verify battery is fully charged (or has adequate charge.)

Check for corrosion at the terminals (battery and starter posts)
