Noise at 55 MPH

I have put almost 1000 miles on my 02 LS V8 Sport I bought 3 weeks ago. I am noticing a weird phenonmenon as I apply throttle at 49 MPH there is a noise like a RRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRR that peaks at 55 MPH and then disappears over 60 MPH. When I first heard this I thought it was wind noise. Then I thought it was tires but both of those are not correct. I have found it is directly related to the throttle. If at 55 I take my foot off the gas pedel the noise stops.

Any comments?
 
Does it have an aftermarket air intake or exhaust? Could be a drone from those.

What section of the car is the noise coming from? I had a similar sound at that speed, it was with the rear differential.
 
yea it kinda sounds like a pinion bearing issue.

like tony said.. where do u hear the noise.. front, rear, left, right
 
It could also be your rear halfshafts.........they have a revised design now that is larger in diameter. Just a shot.......

ISSUE

Some vehicles may exhibit a "moaning/droning" noise during light accelerations with the transmission in 5th gear at highway speeds (100-130 km/h (60-65 mph) for V6 vehicles or 80-90 km/h (50-55 mph) for V8 vehicles). This noise will disappear if the transmission is shifted to 4th gear or when lifting the throttle. The noise may be due to the body reacting to a resonant frequency generated by the powertrain.

ACTION

Install revised larger diameter rear halfshafts (1W6Z-4K138-AA (RH) and 1W6Z-4K139-AA (LH). The larger diameter halfshafts should reduce the resonant frequencies generated by the powertrain. Refer to the 2000-2002 LS Workshop Manual, Section 205-05 for installation procedure.
 
Yea...halfshafts or diff bearings. The pinion and carrier bearings were shot in mine, but the noise was pretty loud.

Is this from a Ford TSB? If so, do you have the TSB #? I'd like to armed with it when I take the car back to the dealer. If not a TSB, where did you get that? Thanks. Not sure wehre the noise is generated from, seems like from under the car, but I don't know where.
 
Jax...you realize that if your car is out of warranty, this won't be covered. It will be on your shoulders. By the way, I see your from the Valley of the Sun too. I don't know about you, but I have had HORRIBLE service from both Earnhardt in Tempe and Fiesta in Mesa. (Mesa and the 60) I mean what they have done is almost criminal...and they have done it on multiple occasions. I now take my cars to Five Star Ford in South Scottsdale for everything. I also heard that the Lincoln dealer in Scottsdale is very good...but that's a hike for me, so I haven't used them.

It's funny you mention this. I have had my LS for about 3 months now, putting a little over 6,000 miles on it. I have noticed the same noise. Sometimes it's worst then others, and I keep on thinking that when I take it to the dealership they aren't going to hear it. Now that I know I'm not the only one with the problem, I'm sure they've seen it before. The noise sounds to me like it's coming from the underneath and rear of the car. It's definetely most predominant going 40-55mph and "goes away" at 60 and above. I'm going to take it in to the dealer since it's still under warranty.

Yes, thanks I understand, it is under warranty tho. I called the service mngr after doing some internet research and found that there is a TSB on this. He told me to bring it in and they would check it out ( both the car and the TSB) and let me know. STAY AWAY FROM ALL EARNHARDTS. I sued them over their bulls*#t. They are horrible and should be killed. Chapman is great to me as is FIve Star. Between the two Lincolns I own I use one or the other. Besides the LS I have a '97 MArk.

So any of you guys with this rear end vibration problem, if you are under 50,000 miles take it in. There is a newly designed half shaft that fixes this, so I am told. Still waiting to hear from Chapman LM.

Hey, DLS8K. You were right on the money!!!! So if any of you have the same problem follow his advise, he published the parts #'s and all. Thanks, guy.
I'll have my car back on Friday, hope it's all good.
PS. I told the Service Mngr about your post and the part #'s etc. they did their own research and came to same conclusion.

Thank you for the comments. I figure if I can at least point someone in the right direction before them heading to the dealership, than I have done my job. So many times, people will go into a service department with something wrong with their car and the service advisor could tell them their "muffler belts" or "blinker fluid" were bad and the customer would be none the wiser. If there is a problem someone has, the first thing I do is check the TSB's to see if it is a common problem....if so, than that is one thing to look at. If not, than I have to do some thinking. Anyways, glad I could help you! :Beer
 
I just bought a 2000 LS with 69k and I noticed this very slightly too, should I have the rear half-shafts replaced too? It doesnt really bother me if it is a normal noise...what you think?

Well after the dealer replaced the half-shafts the car still made the noise so after further consult with LM they are replacing some parts in the differential. At least it's all under warranty.
To answer your question... I have maintained with them that if the "noise" was harmless and therefore not hurting the car and it didn't need to be done, then I wanted that documented so I would be protected in the future. They have never admitted that the noise was harmless. So, yes, you need to get it fixed, as it is not "harmless".

If the problem is the diff bearings, they should be replaced. If it is minor axle hum, you probably don't need to worry. The problem is, most techs will diag wrong unless they are experienced as you can see in this thread. It was pretty easy for me to get the rear on jack stands and then listen to the rear with a friend using controlling wheel spin. I used a long screwdriver to my ear to pin-point where the sound was coming from.

Not bashing the Lincoln tech. Sometimes this stuff can be hard to locate. I have been working on cars on and off for 20 years and find every car has different quirks. Just spent the day working on a Vtec swap for a Prelude today. Darn cam, crank, and waterpump sprockets are different on the J-spec than US version! DOH!

JAX: You need to get your old bearings and post pictures. I want to see if they were as bad as mine were. I posted pics of mine months ago. Both sets of bearings were pitted pretty bad. There is not much to our rear diffs. They aren't posi or anything. My backlash was TIGHT and carrier load was EXTREMELY tight. I think that helped to cause premature wear. I'll bet they screwed up assembling a bunch of these one day/week/month. :)
 
Still Not Fixed!!! HELP!

OK, guys, here's the next chapter in this saga.
They have had the car 10 days. They call me Friday afternoon and tell me it's fixed. I get down there and after leaving the place the noise is STILL THERE. I turn around and go back and the tech who fixed it goes with me. Yes, he admits the noise is still there. So they take the car back in to service, but the Manager is on Vacation, and no one of authority to deal with until Monday.
Here's what the service order states;

"ROAD TEST VERIFIED CONCERN CHECK OASIS FOUND TSB 01-21-7 FOUND NEC. TO REPLACE BOTH HALFSHAFTS WITH UPDATED PARTS ROAD TEST NOISE STILL PRESENT NEC. TO REMOVE REAR AXLE AND CHECK BACKLASH .009" OK INSPECT BEARINGS OK FOUND NEC TO OVERHAUL RING AND PINION AND BEARINGS SET BACKLASH TO .007" ROAD TEST OK."

...except it wasn't OK. So I asked if '05s have this problem, answer= no they have a whole different differential, I ask if that can be put in my car, they say Ford probably will not approve as gear ratios are different. I am frustrated to say the least, and told them if they don't fix the car they can have it back, I don't want it. Any advise?

I wouldn't worry about getting an '05 rear. Your's should be fine. They just didn't do something right. Mine was really bad before I replaced the bearings and is fine now.
 
Bearings or shafts? Either way it's annoying...

Okay, so I posted here awhile ago, and I took my car to a local dealer. The tech did a road test with me...and his diagnoses was that the noise is coming from the passenger rear side. This is also what I thought after doing my own testing letting someone else drive while I sat in the back. When I approached the tech I showed him the TSB on the halfshafts, and he told me he hasn't seen it before, and that he hasn't had any problems with noise in LS's. After doing the road test on a Friday, they made an appt to fix it on Monday. They took the car Monday and brought it back unfixed, stating that the part wasn't in. They wanted to take it again on Friday, but that didn't work so they are taking it tomorrow since the parts are in now. He thinks that the wheel bearing is bad on passenger rear, but is replacing both since he stated, "...if one went bad...you're bound to have problems with the other." The funning thing is sometimes it's real bad, sometimes you can hardly notice it. Anyway, tomorrow is the day they will replace the rear wheel bearings, I will report as to the result. The tech also told me that if it didn't get rid of the noise he would replace the half shafts as per the TSB but he didn't feel this was the noise associated with the TSB since shifting out of overdrive didn't make a difference, and he felt the noise was noticable at speeds signifacantly lower then stated in the TSB. Anyway, we'll see what happens...
 
And the noise is gone...

Well I took my car to the dealer and the tech felt that it would be best to begin by replacing the wheel bearings (read my earlier thread). Anyway, today was the day and I just got my car back and all is well on the noise. It is now gone from replacing the wheel bearings. Thank god...it was annoying. Just thought I would fill everyone in with my experience.
