the radio is still getting power, it's lit up and controls appear to be functioning normally. Today I stopped getting any sound, I checked the 20amp fuse in position 21 of the pwr dist box ('premium sound cellular phone')
I haven't yet gone into the trunk to see if the amp is receiving power.
Today when I was tightening the UCA bolt on the drv side near the mst cyl, I temp relocated that module closest to the hood strut there while getting the wrench on that UCA nut
----
the on/off push button stopped working before i got this car, radio is constantly on

yea the volume goes up, as can be seen across the bottom of the display....this on the white one, I plan to replace it like I did on my other 96, I'm just looking for a quick fix until I get time to swap it out...do you remember what the right harness is?
----
edit: the right harnses iss either a Metra 70-5600 without the RCA's, or the 70-5603 without...can't really remember which it is, with or without RCA's?

turn the volume up :)

you are not seriously still trying to use the stock equipment are you.

Sh*t, I still rock the original (non premium sound) system in mine with a tape adapter to ipod..surprisingly it sounds damn good for the base radio and 4 speakers. I just can't bring myself to pull the radio when it works perfectly fine..plus I hate the look of a single din radio with a gaudy spacer in a double din opening. And I don't feel like spending $500 on a touch screen head unit (which is the only thing that looks right in the dash)

If you're happy with the stock radio more powa to ya.

I'd say its a bad amp or perhaps one of the connectors wiggled itself out. If you drop the amp and all the connectors are in place I'd replace it.

I'd like to get back in the cockpit of my blown car one of these days with a real stereo in it. This stock radio in my 98 sucks donkey dong. Horrible-sounding since the day I bought the car. Premium my ass. My mom's Saturn has a better sounding radio. Lincoln tried in that department, and they FAILED.

pulled the radio with a couple of wire coat hanger ends;all the fuses at the drivers door jam fuse panel are solid, the fuse in the PD box at position 21 of the pwr dist box (which the manual says is for premium sound cellular phone, circuit 37, yellow) is good...I'll check the rest of the fuses at the PDB; is there another fuse for the amp somewhere?
in the pit of my gut I have a bad feeling moving that module to tighten the UCA nut may have caused the loss of sound

I am liking driving this $700 Mark so far after 1 day, 1.5'' lowered is kinda cool, sunroof is neat...stock exhaust is so f'n QUIET! running too warm which is prolly from air and maybe a t-stat which is not M-Craft

the amp and radio blow all the time.
i went through two amps and a head unit before i ditched all that old stuff.

this is the module I unbolted and moved when I tightened the UCA bolt- hopefully I didn't mess up any wiring in so doing

thx C, reckon I still need to verify it's getting voltage, do you happen to remember what power amp you bought or what's a good replacement?

edit: I decided to get an elimination harness to do away with the amp, Metra 70-5514 http://www.ebay.com/itm/330536565801?ssPageName=STRK:MEWNX:IT&_trksid=p3984.m1439.l2649

tried that jumper wire, didn't work for me.
i have a four channel alpine amp and an alpine head unit. i threw in some cheaper 3 way door speakers and called it a night.

Actually the 98-02 town cars sound fairly good for a stock system, but the mark is far from premium, took them a few years to figure out what they were doing.

Amp or head unit is usually the main contributors to failure. Find some other ones to swap in and see what happens.

service manual says to access the amp from the cabin after removing back seat, is that what most people do or can I r/r from the trunk?

There's a bolt or two hiding under the rear deck cover that are only accessible from the top. They secure the "Amp rack" to the rear deck.

Just do it. :p I can have the back seat and rear deck out in 5 minutes. It's very straight forward.

yea, I'm sure doing it is alot quicker and simpler than reading how to do it in the service manual

yep, got em out in about 10mins, push back, up, and out for seat; (2) 13mm, push up and out for the back...thx SB

---
so I see the pass side two bolts and a spring clip on the amp, spring retainer in the middle, rear; and a stout plastic retainer on the drv side, then it swings down

dropped that black plastic tray, pulled out the amp...easy to see how that thing cooked over time

looks like I'll need to modify the connections to use a new 4 channel, 4 ohm amp; anybody have a wiring scheme for this? Ford F5LF-18C807-AA

Yes I am why not? :( i had aftermarket but it never worked right with the factory amp, it would clip the amp and cut out so i had to pull it till i can rewire the entire car for new speakers and amp.)

thats because your problem was you STILL kept factory equipment. you should of taken the factory amp out put in a pile with the factory speakers and head unit. dosed it some fuel. set it blaze and then pissed all over it.

after that you install a new sound system.

i ran an aftermarket Alpine headunit for a long time with the factory amp. worked just fine. until the amp died anyway.

Sounds like the factory amp is the achilles heel here..non premium sound stock system doesn't have one correct? Maybe that's why I don't have any problems with the stock system?
