Oil change interval with synthetic

I have been changing my 2000 LS oil filter every 5000 miles & synthetic oil change at 10000 miles. I also do this on my 2001 Sable & 1996 Escort. After 40000 miles the engine oil consumption is virtually nil. My question is am I setting these engines up for premature failure? With alot of high tech members out there any feedback would be appreciated .

I just had mine done at an "Oil Changers" Saturday with synthetic. he told me every 5000 to 6000 is good between changes. Im sure driving habits affect this. BTW my car has 28k miles on it. My air filter was very dirty so knowing that Ill probably change my oil a little more often.
 
i would just change it when the message center says so. it is set up for 5k miles intervals.
 
Yea, I change the filter at 5000 & reset the message center. I started this experiment after 2 chance conversations with ex military techs, one Seabee (heavy equipment operator & 1 Navy (Aircraft Carrier). Both say the lub properties are phenomal even after hard use, they regularly had the oil lab tested.
 
since I do it myself - the $20 to change the oil evey time as well as the filter seems to be good insurance.
 
Yea, $20 is cheap but it cost me $38 with tax for a diy oil & filter (Synthetic) change. With a filter change at 5000 & complete change at 10000 I am spending $45 instead of $76 every 10000. With lub qualities still above pure petroleum based oil why contribute my coin to oil companys? The Sable has 80000 on it now (3.0 24v dohc) with no oil consumption & damn good gas mileage. Still curious if I'm setting up the engine on the LS for failure?

Ideally following the manufacturer’s recommendations is the best idea for maintaining any piece of equipment. After all, they designed it and ought to know how to ensure longevity. When it comes to oil selection and choices, one can follow the suggested product or research and find the best quality lubricant for the budget.

Oil has a duty life that can be tracked by an analysis kit purchased at a local auto parts store. For the price of an oil change you can find out if you need to change the oil. Just because the oil is dark doesn’t mean it’s ready to be changed. A given set of circumstances can yield an oil life of 10k miles. That’s only 3k more beyond the recommended change for some synthetics.

Mobil One has a 10K Syn. oil on the market. Should you do an oil analysis a few times and rather scientifically prove to your likening that your choice of oil can last that long. Then there you have it. Please post and data that you may acquire for the rest of us who are interested!

There are oil and filter comparison sites out there that are conducted by private individuals who offer their findings for a person to draw their own conclusions.

I thought that you were supposed to change your oil with synthetic every 3-5k. Is that not right?
 
I heard from Amsoil rep, change filter at 3k and oil at 6k. My friend did this for his Camaro he has owned and keep mint since his teen, he was also advid Drag Racer. He used the same principle for his daily drivers.

Me on the other hand my SHO I use Dino and chage every 3k-4k, syn not recommended for the 3.4L (I have 165K on the clock and not a drop oil is burnt)

This car well... ford putting 5w-20 in which is syn blend... so I will do the 5k error on the side of caution.

hey it can't hurt to do it more often. the more the better. I use mobil 1 synthetic and still do it every 3000. or near it.
 
I'm with jokken on this one... I do alot of in-town driving in dusty Arizona. Its a bit more costly for the synthetic and bosch premium filter every 3k... but, that's what separates us from those jabronies that don't know/care about cars.
 
Hello everyone, well i dont get online very often anymore but i did read this post and wanted to reply. I switched over to synthetic on my 00 Ls . After i my first FULL synthetic change my car made a very loud noise definately NOT normal. so when i took it up to the dealer they told my only to use a synthetic blend and that full syn. wasnt good for this LS engine. i have changed back to a syn. blend but its still making the noise when its been run most of the day . AFTER its warmed up.
(The FSE tech and dealer are saying its a normal exaust manifold -intake noise ????)

This isn' my first experiment with synthetic or semisynthetic. I started testing semisynthetic oils in 1989 on my 1986 FLH. I changed the oil & filters at progressively longer interval's maxing out at 2500 for filter change (Fram despite of all their bad press) & 5000 for oil & filter change. I sold the bike in 2002 with 93000 + miles for 500 less than I paid for it. The buyer said he was a dealer mechanic. I believe oil changes can be made 10000 mile intervals with the right oil @ filter changes every 5000 in passenger vehicles. Just my @ cents worth, I couldn,t imagine how much oil that would save the USA.

I was at my buddy's shop early one morning ripping the head off of my beater.

just as he comes in for the day this lady pulls in with a newer exploder that’s making a crazy racket. It was clacking like it had a few pieces of metal bouncing around in the engine. (bearings probably took a crap) He ran over told her to turn off the engine. He checks the oil. Later he told me the oil was black as night and like water, completely shot. He asked the lady when the last oil change was done and all the response he got was a blank stare. He noticed something about the oil filter that made him think it was the original filter. It looked like she never had the oil changed. 36000 miles on the original oil.

He goes to me later on after she left, every one always wonders how long they can go without an oil change. There’s your answer.... better change it every 35000 miles!

he told the lady drive home slow have someone do an oil and filter change and let a few quarts of oil drain right thru the engine, fill it back up and then drive it to the dealer and complain about the noise. then he told her flat out, hopefully they'll replace your engine under warranty and they won't guess it blew up because of neglect.

lmao, he didn't even want to get involved with that job and warranty mess...
