Oil change

Hey this may sound stupid but i just bought my car about 6 months ago and just now got to about 3200 miles since i've had it and decided to change oil. I took it to a quick lube place around town and just told em to change oil check air filter and such. Well a few weeks ago i was looking under the hood and noticed that there is a sticker kinda by where the hood latches that say change with only 5w-30. Ok now the place changed the oil put 10w-30. this isnt gonna effect really much of anything will it. Some ideas of what other people are using and if they us 10w-30 or stick with the 5w-30.
 
I have an 04 V-6 and it calls for 5-W-20 Synthetic Blend. I sure would not take my car to any of these "Quick Change" places. I will only go to my dealer and get the correct oil and filter. Does anyone out there use Mobil 1 100 % Synthetic?
 
Ya But Doesn't It Cost 50 Bucks At Lincoln Dealer When They Use The Same Oil And The Quick Place.. And as far as using mobil synthetic i used mobil 100% sythetic in my work car a 1994 dodge intrepid and motor has 230,000 miles and had it in the mechanic and they did a compression check and still has real good compression. Although when i first started using the synthetic oil from the original oil at about 50000 miles i had to replace the valve cover gaskets.

Nothing but Mobil-1 in all my new vehicles. I don't chance my oil changes w/ ANYONE, including a dealer. DYI or DIE!

ALL Mobil 1 products in all my cars. Its the best I have ever used!

Mobil 1 is factory standard now for BMW, Porshe, Merc, .... I believe even Caddi and Lincoln have either switched or are about to.
 
What i am wondering though is why should i use 5w-30. And i have only changed the oil once since i bought the car which by the way i am loving it. Is it going to hurt anything going from 5w-30 to 10w-30 back to 5w-30. i am thinking its not gonna hurt anything just don't want my seals to go bad if that will cause problem just changing weights of oil. I know it did going from regular oil to synthetic oil in other car.

I think it depends on the place you go! Get to know your manager and the employees of the shop where you get your oil changed. They'll take better care of you.

Personally I don't like Dealers - High price and they are not always the best place to take your car.

There has been much discussion on old change in other LvC forums... check them out and see what many of the experienced Lincoln and Cadillac owners say!

As for me I like to do my own oil change - I use 100% synthetic in my Mark VIII and a Synthetic blend in my Mark VII.

As for Oil filters earlier threads have praised the (I know you won't believe this but) Wal-Mart Supertech filters...
 
I just bought my ;01 v6 LS.. any way of checking what type of oil is in it?... I dont want to go from synthetic to regular and hurt the engine.

I bought my 02 LSV8 two weeks ago and it doesn't show that it needs an oil change but I know that can be reset. Should I go ahead and change the oil so that I know it has been changed? And to jump on the whole synthetic thing, in your opinions should I switch to synthetic? I like Castrol products but I would go with Mobil if the general consensus is that it's better. What about a synthetic blend?

You are fine with synthetic or dino, IMO. I am using Penzoil 5w30 and have always used Castrol GTX 10w30 in my older v8 cars. I have never had problems with Motorcraft filters and stick with them.

Oh...and yes. Just change the oil. That is always the first thing I do when I buy a car.
 
Oil

I have a 92 GMC truck with 187,000 miles on it and the dealer has done all the oil changes with what ever they use in a 10 W 30, and I have not had any problems at all.
I have a 2001 GMC truck with 24,000 on it and I use Mobile 1 in it. Not enough miles to tell what is going on with it.
I would use Mobile 1 in my ls (04 V6) 4,000 miles but the dealer uses a synthetic blend and it is free, dose any one think I should go to the expense to use Mobile 1?
Of interest, I have a lawn tractor that I wanted to use Mobile 1 in so I called Kohler and they said Mobile 1 would be fine but only after I had 50 hours on the motor. They said the rings would not seat with Mobile 1. Sounds to me like it must lubricate pretty good.

:) I have a Kohler engine in my lawn tractor also. Been using Castrol GTX 10w30 in it for 12 years now. Oil looks very clean every time I change it and the engine still runs like new. I mow about 1.5 acres every week with it....well, I just moved and now I have a small yard. :) I have a full frame tractor and the frame cracked in the front along with some of the suspension. My neighbor helped me weld it back together. So...the engine outlasted the frame! Obviously the thing is worked hard. I change the filter every other oil change, as recommended. Darn filter is upside down in that thing, so it is almost impossible to pre-lube.

Also, it is very common to see the recommendation to use regular oil for break-in purposes.
 
Mobil 1 5w-30 with a FLM Motorcraft filter is what I use on my 00 LS.
Mobil 1 5w-30 with a FLM Motorcraft filter is what I use on my 01 Ranger.
Mobil 1 10w-30 with wick style filter is what I use on my 67 Jaguar XKE Series 1.
Mobil 1 10w-30 with a Fram filter is what I use on my 88 Jaguar XJS V-12.

Believe me it will not hurt the motor if you have had regular oil in it. Be sure to change it every 3000 miles especially the first couple times the motor will work out the regular oil. Good luck!

Well to be honest, eventhough i want i don't think i am going to take the chance of having to pay for new valve cover gaskets and others possibly by switching to synthetic i will stay with the mobil 5w-30 which i have always used. And to someone who uses penzoil I have heard that its really not the best oil to use. Over a long period of time sludge and build is real bad with penzoil. Not sure if they don't use the kind of detergents and cleaners that other oils companys use or not. But thats just word of mouth, can't promise thats the truth.
 
I agree with you on Penzoil... I used to use it until I did a rebuild and found more crud in my 351 than in the drop pan in the oven. I think the only thing worse is quaker sludge. I took teh valvle cover off of a 351 truck engine, and glggled when I saw what looked like a giant burnt fudge brownie with the imprint of valve gear on it. Unreal. I have been using Castrol GTX for the last 5 or so years and have had very good luck. I even popped a valve cover off to see how things looked. Clean.

Either Mobil 1 or Castrol. Depends on what you want to spend...
 
Oily question

Can anybody reassure me??? I recently bought a 2001 LS/v6 5 spd. The first thing I did was fill the tank with premium, buy a cold air intake and change to synthetic oil. It runs great, by the way. I need to know if I'm hurting anything by using 5-30 instead of 5-20. Thanks.

Certainly using 5w30 instead of 5w20 will not hurt anything. I will probably use 10w30 in mine because I live in the South.

why would you use anything different than what Lincoln says?

BTW - my 2001 manual says to use 5w-30.
 
I agree with Quik... Use what Ford says... unless you're buring oil at 500 miles to the quart or worse, stick to the basics...

I'm no expert, but I'd like to think I try to make an informed decision once in a while... Happy Valentines Day! Yeah right, talk about a made up holiday to make men spend money. Anyway, ya'll were right. Changed my oil Sun and was probably the easiest oil change I've ever done. Talk about looks being deceiving. Anyway I went to get the Mobil 1 and apparently they make a 0W-20 which they say to use as a 5W-20 (says so on the bottle) Has anybody else noticed this?
 
Man i don't know quik... I am still a strong believer that synthetic is a lot better.. I mean i would think that from what i have read that it is more lubricating the regular oils, meaning it will run cooler. A friend of mine is a reseller for royal purle sythetic oils and he has told me from his experiences hauling heavy trailers with trucks and such that the rearend will tend to cooler then regular oils. Don't know if he actually took a thermostat reading or what. But trannys run a lot better.
