What brand oil filters do you guys use and where do you get them at? I plan on using Royal Purple oil and I am trying to find a decent oil filter to go along with it. So far all I have found is the basic Fram and STP filters. Are there any options for an extended life filter to go along with the oil? Any input would be appreciated. Thanks in advance.

Wal-Mart oil and filters are actually some of the best out there. The filters are much better than the offerings of Fram, which are actually quite poor.

I agree with the Walmart stuff. I have used their SuperTech synthetic oil and oil filter on almost all my cars. My local Walmart though sells motorcraft stuff. I just did an oil change this past weekend using Motorcraft 5w-20 synthetic blend and motorcraft filter fl-2021, cost me about $20. Everyone has their opinions on what is better than something else, i just decided to stick with what the factory recommends.

I have been using the Wix purchased thru RockAuto. I think they are about $6 plus shipping. If you order several, the shipping per unit is reasonable.

The local autoparts stores seem to be selling between $12 and $16 mostly Fram.

Good Luck,

Jim Henderson

The WalMart SuperTech filter I purchased for my 2002 V8 LS did not fit. The opening was too small for the screw on part. Had to borrow the girlfriends truck and hed to Pep Boys and grab a Purolator filter.
I forget which part # the Supertech was, but the side of the box said "replaces MotorCraft FL-400S filter"

The advance/discount auto parts brand filter is the wix. I usually go with that or motorcraft.

I use Mobil1 oil and filter exclusively on my V6 LS. I can't find a Mobil1 filter for the V8, so am using the Motorcraft. Sorry guys, I just don't trust any off brands (like Wal-Mart, Pep Boys, Auto-Zone brands).

You won't go wrong with Mobil 1 oil and filter, but the "offbrands" are usually re-labeled versions of excellent quality "namebrand" filters.

Thanks for all the input. I tried doing a forum search for this topic but didn't come up with anything. I've seen Wal-Marts that carry Motorcraft brand so that may be the route I take.

Wix is an outstanding filter.

Motorcraft is the factory filter and comes with the silicone check valve. You can't go wrong there.

Fram is the cheapest piece of junk in the world. Go look on some of the Cobra forums and you will be amazed at the issues caused by their filters.

Perhaps you should put your trust into actual research and data as opposed to lack of faith because they aren't "the name" everyone knows. The SuperTech filters are among the top out there, regardless of name or price...and this is coming from fact, not my opinion or beliefs. Actual data proves this, and was provided to me via a lubrication engineer who manages many shops in Florida.

Data, research and facts are wonderful things. Might you give us an example of your actual data, so that we don't have to put our faith and trust into the Florida shopowner? :)

I didn't say he owned the places. He might, I just can't remember if he does or doesn't, and don't want to misrepresent him. He posted about it either on LoL of FvC, and I did some follow-up emails with him. I would recommend a search on those sites, and I will see if I can find more information on it. Google is also your friend; I've done my homework, and am not typically one to save all of the notes for the next who comes along and doesn't want to do the footwork, if you know what I mean. Here is what I found from an email or PM with him:

Max-Life as well as almost all the other 'high-mileage' oils are very good if your engine exibits leaks and high oil-consumption.
However, if the engine has been well cared for, stick with the regular oil.
The extra sealing and wear additives cause some other additives not to be put in in as great a quantity as with regular, specifically ZincDiAkylDidithioPhosphate...otherwise known as ZDDP, which is an excellent 'yellow metal' lubricant.
I use Mobil 1 in my 'good' cars, and Wal-Mart 'Super-Tech' full synthetic in the others.
The Wal-Mart brand is really top-of-the-line Quaker State with an off-the-shelf additive package. Tests very well in many, many tests.
Wal-Mart's 'Super-Tech' oil filters are also very good, made by Purolater mostly, some from Champion Labs. All with synthetic media, at no extra charge! Both very good filter manufacturers. The 'S/T' filters also test out very high.
Stay away from 'Fram'oil filters. Thier quality has gone downhill dramatically ever since Allied-Signal bought them years ago. They have come in near last place in every recent oil filter test by most filter labs.
The worst filters are 'Group 7', 'Duetch' and 'Fram'.
The best filter in test after test is usually 'Napa Gold', followed closely by 'Casite'.
Interstingly, 'Motorcraft' used to be the best in all tests until about 6 or 7 years ago, then thier production was farmed out to other manufacturers, and thier quality dropped accordingly.
However, the 'Motorcraft HP-1' still tests out well, about the same as 'Summit' racing filter.
In synthetic media, the Mobil 1 and Purolater 'Pure One' filters are just about the best in all respects. They are both made by Purolater.
I use the 'Pure One' on my good cars, and the Wal-Mart 'Super-Tech' on the others.
The Wal-Mart stuff is a screamin' good deal: Synthetic @ $2.97 /qt., and filters at $1.97 makes for a less than $17.00 oil change with full synthetic, and with a superior synthetic-media filter!

Only issue with other than Mobil1/Amsoil/Royal Purple is they aren't true synthetic. Castrol sued the gummint years ago to re-word the way synthetic is defined. Other than the 3 brands listed above, the other "synthetic" oils are re-formulated from petroleum stock. Only the 3 listed above start with synthetic stock.

The off-brand filters may be fine, but to me it's like Costco gas. Today it might be Chevron and tomorrow it might be Shell as they just buy left over stock. The way Wal-Mart does business I just don't trust their quality consistency. Interesting read:

To each his own and YMMV.

Wait a minute....i buy Costco gas. Whats wrong with costco gas? One thing about Walmart though. You need to think of them as the end of the line. They have nothing to due with the manufacturing or quality of the product they sell. All of their "equate" branded merchandise is just relabeled top brands. All of it, from soap to aspirin to oil filters. Think of Walmart as a huge organized flea market, they just resell a ton of other companies products. They sell motorcraft. Do i trust Walmart to buy a good steak, not really. But i do trust all the generic branded stuff. But honestly, who doesnt live close enough to a Ford dealer to get a genuine motorcraft filter? They cost about $7. And if god forbid something serious happened to the engine the dealer would have nothing to bitch about.

I stick to Motorcraft filters on my Mark. I usually get them at Wal Mart or any automotive store like Autozone or Advance. Just don't get Fram. I don't know for sure, but if a few people tell me they are crap, I have no problem avoiding them.

Notice in the quote about the Napa filters testing out consistently high? Those are manufactured by Wix. You can't go wrong with Wix.
