Max-Life as well as almost all the other 'high-mileage' oils are very good if your engine exibits leaks and high oil-consumption.
However, if the engine has been well cared for, stick with the regular oil.
The extra sealing and wear additives cause some other additives not to be put in in as great a quantity as with regular, specifically ZincDiAkylDidithioPhosphate...otherwise known as ZDDP, which is an excellent 'yellow metal' lubricant.
I use Mobil 1 in my 'good' cars, and Wal-Mart 'Super-Tech' full synthetic in the others.
The Wal-Mart brand is really top-of-the-line Quaker State with an off-the-shelf additive package. Tests very well in many, many tests.
Wal-Mart's 'Super-Tech' oil filters are also very good, made by Purolater mostly, some from Champion Labs. All with synthetic media, at no extra charge! Both very good filter manufacturers. The 'S/T' filters also test out very high.
Stay away from 'Fram'oil filters. Thier quality has gone downhill dramatically ever since Allied-Signal bought them years ago. They have come in near last place in every recent oil filter test by most filter labs.
The worst filters are 'Group 7', 'Duetch' and 'Fram'.
The best filter in test after test is usually 'Napa Gold', followed closely by 'Casite'.
Interstingly, 'Motorcraft' used to be the best in all tests until about 6 or 7 years ago, then thier production was farmed out to other manufacturers, and thier quality dropped accordingly.
However, the 'Motorcraft HP-1' still tests out well, about the same as 'Summit' racing filter.
In synthetic media, the Mobil 1 and Purolater 'Pure One' filters are just about the best in all respects. They are both made by Purolater.
I use the 'Pure One' on my good cars, and the Wal-Mart 'Super-Tech' on the others.
The Wal-Mart stuff is a screamin' good deal: Synthetic @ $2.97 /qt., and filters at $1.97 makes for a less than $17.00 oil change with full synthetic, and with a superior synthetic-media filter!
