I have a 2002 lincoln ls 109k on it ... The temperature started getting hot very slowly so i drove it home like 3 miles and the temperature was going up and down but it was still hot and also while driving it felt like it was puttering almost like misfire by the time i got home it was over heating ... And i also realized my A/C wasent cold anymore ... I had an over heating problem before and it was the fan clutch system or w.e its called that everyone says it always goes bad .... But it was nothing like that this time it felt tottaly different ... Any suggestions? Thermostat? Idk has anyone had this problem and any solutions ...thanks for any help

There is no fan clutch.
The hydraulic fan system is a common problem. Cracking of the plastic cooling system parts is another common problem. Almost certainly you have one or both of these issues. A little searching on this site will give you lots of info on this.
BTW, the PCM shuts off the AC compressor when the engine gets way too hot.

Yea thats what it was the hydraulic fan system ... I replaced that and i know what it does and what its sounds like .. When that happened it got hot real quick and it sounds like a wineing sound and it was nothing like that ...it got hot real slow and the temp was going up and down and my car was putting almost like misfire and i kno when it gets hot it swiches to 4 cylinders but it wasent even that hot yet to do that..any other suggestions thermostat... Timing chain? And oh ok about the a/c how it shuts it off thanks ...

Ok so today i drove to and from work about 10 min each way by the time i got home the temp. Was riseing i put on the heat to see if te temp would go down and it did so im thinking its the thermostat ... Then i popped the hood and herd a bubbling sound and looked at the anti freeze and it was boiling ...? Do you know what thats about ? Thanks

Yes, you almost certainly have a cracked piece (or cracked pieces) of plastic somewhere that is letting air into the cooling system. Air doesn't cool nearly as well as coolant, so the engine overheats. Have you read any of the overheating posts on this board?

Yea ive been reading alot ... And some people sound like they almost have the same problem but not exact...there was someone saying something about the boiling but i cant seem to find it anymore ...

Boiling is one thing. It happens when the temperature goes over 230 degrees (lower if your cooling system isn't holding pressure). Water turns to steam, and steam doesn't cool nearly as well as water. Usually, this forces coolant to vent from the degas bottle cap pressure relief. You could have boiling due to overheating because of a hydraulic fan problem, or a blocked radiator.

Bubbling is another thing. You get bubbles in the degas tank because of air in the engine cooling system. The air get there because of one or more small leaks in the cooling system. This is a very common LS problem. I don't understand why you don't want to look for this common issue first?

It is also possible that you have exhaust gas bubbling into your cooling system from a failed head gasket or a warped or cracked head. However, this is very very unusual for the LS V8.

Well im trying to look but cant really find anything ...i replaced the hydralic fan thing like 2 years ago and it doesnt seem like that cause when that happened it went straight to over heat ... This is just running hot not going all the way to over heat ...

Another thing i saw about the fan spinning ... Its spinning but i dont think its spinning fast enough im not sure .... So with all this info what do you really think ? ... Its getting hot , when i turn on heat it goes down, and antifreeze is boiling , and i dont think fan is spinning fast enough not sure tho..and i dont see any anyifreeze leaking .... Is there anything i can look at or test that i could find out whats wrong ?

Well, there are different modes of failure for the hydraulic fan system. Was the whole system replaced, or just some parts of it? Even if it was the whole thing, something could have failed by now even due to a poor install, bad manufacturing quality, or someone mistakenly pouring coolant into the hydraulic (ATF) reservoir. If it has not completely failed, but can't get to higher speed operation, you will get the symptoms that you have.

Leaks from the plastic cooling system parts are very common (with age) and can be very difficult to see. If you know what you are looking for, you can often spot the coolant residue on the parts that the leak sprays onto. You can fill the reservoir and bring the engine up to temperature, then squeeze on one of the radiator hoses while looking for leaks.

The degas bottle is a common source of leaks too. You can't look at it in the car and tell. You have to remove it to see them. Once you've done that, you might as well replace it anyway.

You can replace all the plastic cooling system parts for about $500 in parts cost, and it is wise to do so every five years or 100K miles (whichever comes first). Of course, this interval varies with climate. The hydraulic cooling fan system costs in the thousands to replace completely. Alternately, you could convert to an aftermarket electric cooling fan for much less.

I believe the whole system was replaced cause it cost me 600$ and that was just for parts he just charged me for the parts cause it was a family friend that was done at like 85000 miles now i have 109k... And when thatwas happening it sounded like a loud wineing noise and went straight to hot and it doesnt seem anything like that and i had engine light on that comp. picked that code up ... Now i dont have any engine light on so i cant even put comp. on to figure out wats wrong... So what do you think i should do change thermostat and check for any leaks in resivor? Or?

I've already said what I think.
$600 isn't close to enough to have replaced the whole hydraulic fan system. You probably had the pump or the fan motor replaced, not both, and not the hoses and reservoir too. Just the parts, at a discount, total $1500 with no labor.

To test your fan you can start the car after it has cooled and wait for the fan to come on. Then turn on your AC and the fan should speed up. Correct me if I am wrong joegr. If that works fine then change your degas bottle (reservoir). That usually fails first. The plastic it is made of is softer and get more brittle sooner than the other plastic components. But beware that if the degas bottle change fixes your issue the rest of the plastic parts will soon follow. I would do what joegr suggested and replace all the plastic parts at once.
