I'v alwaysed noticed the smell of coolant. Replaced the thermostat 6 months ago. All good for maybe a month or 2. It would try to overheat and I would open the hood and release the pressure in the overflow tank slowly. Close the hood and on my way for about a week or 2. I noticed coolant leaked out a few times. Maybe 4 or 5 times. Also, my heat takes awhile to heat up and same goes for the AC it takes awhile. Last night I went to play ball and didn't make it maybe 5 miles befor it tried to overheat. I pulled over poped the hood released the overflow and drove to my buddies house about 3 more miles. When I left my buddies house I didn't make it maybe 5 miles before it would try to overheat again. Poped the hood released the overflow pressure but it didn't work this time. When I got home I sat there with the engine idle. No heat. No AC and the coolant will not flow out of the resivoir tank. What is going on here. This has slowly got worse and worse. Before I could just pull over do pop the hood and release and on my way for a week or 2. Now not working anymore. My fan works like a champ. Please don't say the word "block".....How about water pump or radiator even. Maybe even my tubes. Thx, LNCD UP

Its me LNCD UP. I just checked again on the my car and I noticed that the Coolant was empty just about. I filled to proper level started the car and I now have heat. I didn't have heat the other day and now....So I sat there and let it warm up to where the needle was just a hair line below normal. Everything fine....Well, then I went for a drive and I noticed what sounded like a jet engine the fan kicking on. The more gas I give it the louder it is. What is that all about???? When I got back to my house after that quick little 2 min drive I popped the hood and I noticed my coolant was just about empty again. I thought that I saw a small drip following me before I made it back to my house. I'm going to let the engine cool down and put more 50/50 coolant in and fill it back up to the proper level. Where would all the coolant go from the first time I put it in today.??? Does that much circulate throught the engine/water pump and so on...???? Also I don't have any white smoke coming out of my exhuast. This car is confusing me

I had the same problem. The fan is hydraulic, so when you hit the gas, the fan rpm will accelerate also. Take out your thermostat and place it in a pot of boiling water. If the thermostat does not open up, you will have to replace it. After that is all well and done, replace the fluids 50/50 and get the air bubble out of the system. It should be good to go. If you have any more questions let me know. Good luck

Fan failure maybe

I had the fan motor failure in mine but lost no fluid, so you may have something else wrong. But the fan motor failure starts slow, you overheat, then it cools down and runs fine for awhile, then heat spikes again, on and off, drives you nuts. I have the 2001, the early ones had really crappy hydraulic fans, mine went out around 60k. This is a common problem.

Filled up fluids

Well, I noticed that my hydralic fan fluid was low and filled it up to the normal level. Also it took some time to get the coolant level back to normal after starting and letting it warm up then letting it cool off so that I could put more coolant in. After all of that no more overheating and I have heat and my AC works.

I do notice a strange smell when I turn the heat on which leads me to believe that I do have a leak or something is going on. Any comments.

Thanks

After the car is warmed up. Look behind your driver side front wheel at the bottom of the front fender for small drips of coolant. If it is wet then your coolant reservoir is cracked and leaking.

Yep there is some fluid there and it appears to be coolant. Thanks for the tip fishbone.

Also I noticed that I do have a small leak consisting of the hydralic fan fluid (ATF). How do u troubleshoot that problem?

Yah your fluid container is cracked, and the fan hydrolic prob... I have the same problem. I havent messed with it yet cause I havent had my car but it seems like sometimes the fluid goes low and then the leak stops for a bit right?

About 2 weeks before I took my car to the body shop I had noticed the leak so I added fluids and then after that it didnt leak again. This happend a few months ago to. It leaked out but not all the way, I toped it off and then it was fine for a bit.

leaking

my 2000 had the same problem. coolant resevoir had a whole and it would run hot periodically.

I haven't noticed any fluids leaking since I topped them off. No overheating either.... I do notice that my fan sounds like a jet engine though and I cannot figure it out. Why would my fan be so loud in stop and go traffic?
