 so I was driving to work yesterday and right before I got there the ls decided to overheat again. This happened not to long ago. I'm really getting tired of this crap. I wish I knew about this site before I bought the car I would have gotten something different. I love my car but I can only take so much of this plus I cant afford this crap.

dont worry man, can you see any leaks? have you had your thermostat replaced in a while?

Were you sitting in traffic, driving on the highway, AC on or off?
Whats the level of the coolant in the degas bottle when the car is cold/hot?
Have you checked for leaves stuck in front of the radiator?
What repairs have been made in the past regarding this issue?

Come on, if you want help you need to be more specific about what you are experiencing.

year and engine?

give some more info on the vehicle year and engine.

It is a 2002 v8 1st gen I changed the thermostat a about six months ago mabye a little more. But I was just sitting there waiting for the stop light to change when I hear the car warning me. But when I went to pull over the temp went down to almost normal. On the way home it stayed a little above normal haven't driven it since.

Well Lucky I can tell you from experience that... Oh wait, this isn't my car overheating again!;)
Have you had your elec. fan replaced yet?
I know what you mean about knowing what you know before you bought the car you would have gotten something different but I still feel (barring anything else BIG going wrong) that with time and money I can make it look like no other LS on the road!

Mine did that when it had air in the system. Also, if your coolant/water mixture is off, you may not cool enough, or boil too easily. This introduces air into the sytem which is difficult to pump. This can cause overheating and prevents the climate control from blowing heat with the heater on high. It can also cause excess pressure which usually causes the reservoir to dump a bunch of coolant on the ground.

One other thing to note is that the system needs to be under pressure to increase the boiling temperature. If there is a leak, usually in the reservoir as I'm currently dealing with, then that can also cause the coolant to boil at a lower temp and release air into the system. My leak is small enough to prevent boiling, but I drip coolant on the ground. I also have little heat available inside at idle which may be a combination of what I just mentioned, and a potentially bad auxilary pump. (See this thread:http://www.lincolnvscadillac.com/showthread.php?t=57935)

If you're not sure what the mixture is in there, drain it out and start from scratch. Check for leaks and pressure test the system if possible. Be sure to follow the proper air bleed technique: http://www.lincolnvscadillac.com/tech/Lincoln-LS/CoolingSystemDraining/.

Does the '02 have the hydraulic fan drive system? If so, I'd consider installing an electric pusher fan like I did. You can do it much easier and cheaper than repairing the factory fan system. When you check the coolant, make sure you bleed any air the air at the manifold and at the rubber tube by the coolant degas bottle, while the engine is running at full temp and with the heat on high.

You forgot to mention that you also need to idle at 2000 RPM or so.

Although the fan is not part of my current problem, that will eventually be switched over to electric. Whenever one of the hydraulic systems fail.

So I took my car to get fixed this weekend and I lucked out because all it was only a cap. My old cap seal was broken and aloud air to get into my system. So they just flushed the system and put a new cap and everthing is working fine now. It feels so good to be driving my car again and can't stand being without a car. Next thing on my list now is to fix the clock spring.

What cap was this? My car (00 V8) overheated for the first time the other day. I let it sit the rest of the day and drove it today and it seemed fine.

My '03 kept "overheating," typically within 10 seconds of cranking it up.

turns out I didn't have ANY coolant...

That's bad. How do you run completely out of coolant without any warning? Did a hose come off or something?

I'm not sure how it happened. I assume that coolant just disappears over time. You know, I did assume there'd be a warning, given off by the rogue Windows ME machine that runs my car. I suppose the "warning" was when the temperature gauge would rise, and the car would give off some dire and cryptic warning about engine temperature.

Maybe it was hyperbole to say that there was no coolant. I could see that the coolant reservoir was bone dry. There may have been some in whatever other part of the engine that stores coolant - the radiator, I guess?

But, I added coolant, and the temperature issue went away for now.

Your problem will return. You need to find and fix the leak. Then you need to start actually checking and maintaining your car, starting with fluid levels.

Mysterious coolant leaks

You might want to check those fan shroud mounting bolts. On my '02 LS, some crackerjack professional mechanic removed the fan assembly for DCCV repair or something else and reinstalled the shroud using a cap screw that was too long on one side. Punched a hole in the plastic radiator. The "tech" doped it up with epoxy good enough to get the car out of his bay but left me with a BIG headache. If anything much over 16-18 mm in length is used, look out....
