Overheating, p1299, sitting at stealership

I'll chime in, having been going through this repeatedly myself. I am still suspicious of your fan. I'm wondering, as joegr commented, whether it is going to high speed.

The degas bottle is a job you can do at home. Just budget two hours for your first try and wear gloves to prevent scraped knuckles.

The only positive I could take away from it all was that I can change the degas bottle with my eyes closed now. ALSO, please make sure that after you change any cooling component you follow the tech article above to bleed to air from the system properly. Follow it to the letter.

Thanks. :) I have the procedure all printed up ready to go when I finally get my parts. :)

Yeah.....I have been feeling that way more and more the more research that I do. But the car is 14 years old as of 06/20 this year. So I might as well go ahead and do it anyways. I have already ordered the fan actuator and should have it by Wednesday next week.

I ORDERED IT FROM A FORD DEALER. ITS OEM. not aftermarket. LOL. It was $141 with free shipping.

Anyways, I have two shops telling me 2 different things. One says its the fan and the dealer says I have a leaking degas bottle and should replace the thermostat as well. Since I am leaning more towards the fan actuator at this point, I am going to replace that first. Then I will do the other 2.

If the OEM replacement bottle goes for six days, it'll go for six years.
If this is really what's bothering you, go back to the dealer and have them install it. You'll get a good, long warranty that way, but you'll pay for it.

Lincoln can eat a bag of d!cks on that one! I already paid them $120 just to look at it. At least I got a car wash out of the deal. Not even a good one at that. I still have brake dust on my rims.

Some stuff is okay aftermarket, but some is definitely not. The degas bottle is the #1 no-no for aftermarket. Coils are a close 2nd.

lincoln dealer probably wont lie, they will just overcharge. just do whatever they diagnose yourself.
and get the oem bottle. pretty tough to determine nice plastic from junk plastic until it fails

I don't think they would lie. I do trust Firestone too though. They didn't want to touch the hydraulic fan because they didn't have a tech that is familiar with the setup and the guy that was tending to the LS was honest in saying he didn't want to do the car a disservice by mucking it up.

Firestone says: Fan issue

Lincoln says: Degas Bottle and Thermostat. No fan issue.

I say: The fan isn't kicking into high even when forced to do so when turning on the AC. So I'm going to replace the Fan actuator first and see what happens. I will then also just go ahead and replace the degas and thermostat as well. Hopefully this will kill my overheating issue.

I have already ordered all the parts and should have everything by end of next week. Now I just have to figure out how to get to work M-F of the coming week. Maybe I will just go test drive a new MKZ and keep it until my parts come in. LOL

I trust Firestone as much as I trust Pep Boys!!

If the fan isn't spinning up to high speed the actuator is probably perished. If the degas bottle is original it has certainly failed; plastic gets brittle when it gets old. It is also subjected to numerous hot/cold cycles; that also takes its toll.

Sounds like you need both actuator and degas bottle..... At a minimum. Like Joe said, the other plastic pieces (thermostat housing for one; get the Jaguar aluminum piece) will also need replacement as they are just as old and subjected to the same wear.

Yep. I am replacing these things. I have no idea what has or hasn't been replaced on the car. It had only been twice to a lincoln dealership according to their records. Once in 2004 due to a front end minor accident (fenders and some cosmetic passenger side) and in 2006 for a coil failure on the sand cylinder I've got intermittent misfire codes in.

Other than that no clue. I have only had it since October 1 this year. I've already replaced the upper control arms, shocks, outer tie rods, sway bar stabilizers, rotors, brake pads and steering knuckles.

I do trust firestone because I have had all my other vehicles (last four) 90% taken care of by them. I know most of the service techs and they treat me and my vehicles correctly.

so pretty much the same as every overheat thread thus far... shocker.

if I was a betting man, I would put a large portion of my paycheck on something (or many things...) breaking while changing out the thermostat...

Sooooo glass half empty or just bone dry?

just realistic...

with the age of your car (even with the relatively low miles) and based on past experiences, not only does it sound like you're having the ultra common fan actuator failure, but since it also sounds like you your degas bottle is failing, all the other plastic cooling parts of the motor are also reaching the end of their life. even if none of them are leaking yet (hard to believe) my bet is upon disassembling the thermostat housing to replace the thermostat, either the housing, one of the other parts, or all of them will just fall apart. I've seen this happen first hand.

I've also ordered the metal jag housing from rockauto. I guess I didn't mention that in my list. Everything else (hoses) all look and feel to be in good shape. I'm hoping that is the same when I pull them all off. I'll be waiting a week for parts to come in. So tomorrow I will be pulling it all apart so it will be all ready to put back together when I start getting parts in. Plus I'm doing my COPs and plugs too.

I can identify with the realist position. I'm the one people are usually asking about the state of liquid in my glass. LOL

Don't forget to cover any openings into the engine.....

this is the problem, you can't easily see the micro cracks that leak air in and it will look and feel great right up until it crumbles into a hundred pieces.

Got the fan actuator replaced. WOOHOO! That took an hour. Didn't have to move or remove anything to get to it. However, what a female dog that was. Geesh! Now just to get the degas out, swap the thermostat housing, thermostat, everything else and do plugs and coils. All that has to wait until Sunday. Grrrrrr.

Before I have pulled the dang degas out you can see cracks.

This shows the first 2 leaks in the degas......

This shows a third rash of cracks.......

New Jag metal housing......didn't cut the back bolts.......but they were a prostitue to unbolt and reboot in. Tiny little 1/4 turns.

New degas......

Now for the crime de la creme. I think this was the original tank.....
