I've been thinking lately about how my 96 mark viii would sound with some good pipes. However I'm on the fence about brands and sizes. Any ideas?

Just go to an exhaust shop. Have the "3rd cat" really a resonator so tell them to cut that resonator off.. Have them run dual 2.5'' piping to the back to mufflers of your choice. My dad had flowmaster 40 series 2 chamber mufflers on with a custom catback. Plenty of growl and it was pretty loud for what it was. Here's a video.

ahhh flowmasters sound like poopy on these cars, like stateds above have them remove the resonator and replace it with an x pipe 2.5 exhaust to magnaflow mufflers

Where are you located? I have cat back exhaust from a 98 lsc with flowmaster 40s that was on my 93. You just have to bolt it up. I will let it go cheap.

Flowmasters sound great on the 4V motor.. I wouldn't put anything else on these cars, they're not meant to be loud and obnoxious..

Actually, that 3rd cat is indeed a catalytic converter. Take one off and look inside it. You will see the typical honeycomb ceramic material found in a catalytic converter. On the base models with single exhaust, there is a resonator just behind the 3rd cat. But on the LSC's with true duals, there is only the 3rd cat with no resonator aft of it.

Anyhoo:

My 1995 Mark VIII with LSC true duals, H-pipe, and cherry bomb glasspacks.

My old '97 LSC with H-Pipe and cherry bombs.

And this is my old '96 Mark with single exhaust. It is completely stock except the mufflers have been cut off and replaced with straight pipes. It still had the resonator aft of the 3rd cat.

I'm partial to the sound of glasspacks. It just gives the car an old school 60's muscle car sound. And that's what I like. But everyone has their own tastes.

You can get nice pipe kit from Mandrel bends inc that myself and many have used.

The mid section got all welded up, so I was able to work some more on the rear portion of the exhaust.

I had some experience with the mandrel bent exhaust kits before, but this one takes the cake. It couldn't be off more. They should either stop making this crap, or actually test it on a car before selling it.

It doesn't follow the gas tank properly, nor clears the differential as it should.
Here it is after cutting, splicing in extra pipe, and removing extra elsewhere.

Both rear pipes tacked up and ready for final tig welding. The left pipe required as much cutting and re-welding due to poor fitment. :mad-tilt:

That left pipe should have been sent back, I'm sure your trying to finish this so you just got fixed it.

I remember Doug had no kind words for these pipes.

consider yourself warned...

I was very happy with my tubes from Mandrel bends. Not every part can match up perfect with any and every tube. For the price they can't be beat. If some people want to spend 1000 on exhaust more power to you and then it should be 100% perfect but for 159 dollars come on.

Flows sound blah to me on mustangs. I liked the flow 40s on my dads 95 mark but its all personal preference. You wanna be loud? Get a set of dynomax race bullets and be done with it lol

Well, I decided to bite the bullet and get the piping kit by Mandrel Exhaust Systems for the BA despite the sleuth of "warnings" posted by Chris. Only thing where I messed up was not paying attention to the material as I accidentally got the 2.5" aluminized as opposed to the stainless.

Ah well....

In any event, now I'm battling myself as to what to get to replace the Y-pipe. I've been lurking here & abroad and came to 3 conclusions. Either an X pipe from Summit Racing or SCP, a Magnaflow Tru-X or the Dynomax Ultra-X (2.5" of course).

The other option I'd like the most would be the Dual X from LMS but the website has been under reconstruction for quite some time and am not sure if Geno(is that right?) would mind taking an order for his product to be placed thru LVC.

Perhaps one of yous can chime in on that....
