The power steering went away without a squeal or leakage or any thing? it just stopped. IT HAS FLUID. The car has always been twitchy at higher speeds ,but has always worked.

FOD might be in the system try flushing it. Is it clean? You might have a line pinched some where. How did it happen?

I tried to flush it out , I pulled the cooler line to drain the reservoir & drained it . I started the car to see if the pump would push the rest out it would not drain or even growl like it was empty. I was pulling into my yard & needed to back up some,It just died. I think it has something to do with the variable -assist . I just don't to throw parts at it just to find the problem to be electrical ..Dave

If the variable assist failed you would have full assist all the time, including highway. The system works by applying voltage at higher speeds.

The pump failed, when I took off the belt the pulley & shaft came out of the pump. There were just no external signs of failure . But it's still at full assist with the new pump . dave.

It should be at full assist. Or am I reading that wrong. New pump = full assist.

And boy can you replace a pump fast!

It's only 4 bolts! Plus I have a easy excess bumper ever since it got hung up on a tire stop in the parking lot:eek: I was pissed because I had just replaced the grille about a month earlier & the bottom fasteners were broken:(

do you know how to test the variable assist, because i think mine is always at full assist,it is WAY too lite at highway speeds

The quick way is to pull the fuse and see if you notice a change, if not, its bad. It often gets stuck in the open position, meaning full fluid movement, which means full assist all the time. So there is no way to force less assist since it is stuck.
