Previous owner got me Fucced....

OK...This is what I got from the cylinder 6 the next morning after the incident

This is the only one to make it work in our Marks...A Heli-Coil kit that I got from O'reilly because the other brand names I got from Vatozone and Advance Auto didn't have the square port for an extension causing me to use a socket and not have any room to fit through the plug well

The house I'm livin' at have Wasp nests in most of our trees and they kept flyin' around my head so I used this spray plus alot of runnin' and cursin' and so this kinda killed most of my time on this repair

Thanks to Tommy (XLRVIII), I was able to use this bearing grease I got in my toolbox for the Tap tool to catch the shavings
20100323_143759.jpg
20100323_143713.jpg

I started the Tap tool and stopped frequently to take the shavings off and put new grease to make sure no shavings gets down into the cylinder until I end up with less shavings on the Tap tool

Thanks to Tommy again, This is the insert size he told me to use

I screwed into the insert my new spark plug and add Thread Locker on the threads from the "insert"

Then, I use my spark plug socket with the extension to install the insert like normally when you replace spark plugs with the same torque until the insert is flush at the bottom of the plug well

Thanks to Tommy again:D, I tape the tool ,that flanges the insert to make it permanent, to my extension with duct tape so the sucker doesn't get lost in the plug well and I gave the extension a couple of light taps with a hammer
20100323_151236.jpg

And for the grand finale I install the spark plug

Tada!, the finishing repair

Good write-up! Could be made an article on it's own.

Was it easy to guide that tap straight? That's always the part that worries me when tapping holes.

Cool - that's good.

*remembers using a tap set about 10 years ago that wouldn't go straight/cut clean*

*realizes said 'hand me down' tap set was well used and about 40 years old!!!!*

lol...the kit I got was only $30...I just need more inserts for the rest of the spark plug ports...best $30 spent

Makes sense to get them all done.

I wonder - If you did all eight, if there would be some benefit with running one step colder plugs? (copper core plugs of course, now that you have good hole(s) :D)

My logic: Plugs have to be able to dissipate heat into the heads. The heat range tells you the effectiveness with which they will transfer heat. Adding inserts is effectively like adding a barrier between the cylinder heads and the plugs, therefore the stock plugs can't dissipate the heat as effectively as they did before.

Am I onto something here, or am I insane?

Glad to hear you got it all sorted out...

It's a PITA job, but it looks like you did a fine job.

Call me anytime bro, anytime.

I considered doing all 8 on my car...never got around to it.

Good job! Nice article too, there should never be a problem with that plug again. Your problem is most often caused by over torquing the spark plugs. An awful lot of DIYers never consider using a torque wrench for their plugs.

Whats that???:confused::confused:

I thought you were just supposed to crank them down until you hear POP??? then back off .5 turns! :D
