Primary Timing Chain Tensioner Problem

Hi Guys. I have a 2001 LS V8 with 115,000miles on it. 1 1/2 months ago my secondary tensionary broke and had to replace it. 3 weeks ago the secondary chain busted and had to redue my valves, replace the chain and also replace a timing chain guide. I put it all back together but the chain is still making noise. I opened it back up and the chain was loose because I forgot to pull the slack off. I fixed that I pressed the chain counter clockwise with a screwdriver and had my buddy tight the bolts. It seemed to work no slack what so ever. I put the car back together and the same problem. I reseted the primary chain tensioner with the paper clip and pushed it back in, but same noise. Any ideas of what I am doing wrong anyone? how can i test the tensioner if it is getting enough oil pressure to open back up. I have not taken the engine apart again and wont until I can figure out what exactly I am doing wrong. Thanks a lot, Freddy.

Well with that kind of mileage and you're already have timing issues, I would say go ahead and replace all the tensioners, all the guides, and all the chains or you WILL have future problems.
 
Agreed.

I'm curious if he removed the primary tensioner while replacing the chain guide. I know that blanking plate behind the tensioner has to be installed correctly or there will not be enough oil pressure to the tensioner or possibly the rest of the engine.
 
yes i did remove it and i pushed it back in with a saftey pin and put it back in with the hole on the plate matching the hole on the tensioner so oil can run through. is that the correct way?
 
I believe so. Here is a diagram of the orientation of the plate behind the tensioner. 1st diagram is the drivers side. Could be just a bad tensioner also.

IMO if you go to all that trouble to remove the tensioner I would just replace it. I don't know of a way to test the tensioner honestly.

Give MAX a call from five star ford to the right of the screen, he should be able to set you up with a new tensioner. ------------------>

Hopefully that is what your problem is.
