Hey all,

I've run across a ad for a 2000 lincoln LS 99k miles on it for $1k, needs (from the ad) two catalytic converters, however im worried that the cats got burnt from more issues in the engine. Even with engine issues, the worst i can see is valve gasket + coils + sparks from what im reading on the forums. Nothing saftied or emission tested

ideas? what do you think its worth?

V6 or V8? And a lot more then you listed, hydraulic cooling fan failing, other cooling parts, transmission, timing chain tensioners (V8). Make sure it hasn't jumped a tooth already. It adds up quickly.

Call me crazy but sounds like a decent project. You can get very low prices on everything you mentioned at rockauto.com...like under $1K! I've been using them for years for my own and customer parts needs and they typically crush the prices compared to local auto parts stores.

Here's a shot of a shopping cart for it, guessing on it being a V8

Kingston, just down the 401 east from ya !

Although the miles are low on it, it is an 00 and a 1st gen and there are as members are stating, some issues with them.
however, that's not to say it can't be dealt with and as you mentioned "Good Project".

You'll have to check it out carefully but I'm afraid even if you do, there will be problems.

I think the question should be, are you prepared to deal with the problems?

We can't tell from here ... if it's already running rough and the dash lights up like christmas tree you know your going to be in for some $$$ and tooling time.

Ofcourse the ultimate would be to find something in the later years of the production run but that's not going to happen for just 1K$
No idea what your budget is nor is it my business but if you can up the ante a bit you will sit better in the long run.

Best of luck for sure, just be careful what you commit to.

BTW: cool color, Graphite Blue Metallic I think. (http://gtcarlot.com/colors/car/26672879.html)

----EDIT:

actually, I just found the ad on Kijiji and it doesn't look like "Brenda" can drive very well,
from what I can see, it's banged up on the passenger rear & drivers front.

For what it's worth, I bought an '01 v8 w/ 107.5k on the clock for $400. It wasn't running and I figured out it was a bad fuel pump. $20 and a trip to the salvage yard later and it was running. The seller told me it was overheating and said his (shade tree) mechangic told him it was the water pump. It actually ended up being the degas bottle (the biggest culprit in the cooling issues referenced earlier) and I bought a new one for something like $90. The heat is luke warm on one side and cool on the other so I will need to change the DCCV which is another common failure point on these. I have also changed the tie rods on the front and just recently had to change out the a/c compressor and clutch. The common law is to also change the D/R with it but I did not. (I'm fully prepared to man up if the replaced parts fail because of this.) All in, I'm at about $900 and some of that is the labor for tie rods, alignment and a/c parts. I bought the car in early January and have done much of the work myself to save $.

Was it worth it? YES! I probably would have gotten the same advice had I asked your question before starting here, too. They are honest answers and are only meant to save you from surprises. But only you can determine if you're willing to put in the work/time/$. Just be prepared to change any combination of the things we have all listed, if not all. Keep us posted. BTW, I would talk "Brenda" down on the price to at the most $750.

Thanks for the responses guys, first off its a V8 and since no chrome Im assuming sport (havent confirmed) and any work Id be doing myself.

Taking a closer look at the pictures it does look like the bumper and potentially the passenger side rear tail light might be broken as well. Which i cant seem to find the price for. the bumper would probably have to be replaced (the gap in the lower grill beside the passenger side fog lamp?)

tbh if the rear brake light housing is broken, needing 2 cats and the bumper replacements shed be lucky to get 500 from me. Looking more and more unlikely - Thanks guys

That gap in the lower bumper is where the tow hook cover goes. It's just a piece that snaps in so it's not broken, just missing that piece.

well Today I Learnt :)

Also sent another email asking for more information about the car and the tail lights (scratches i can fix) any one know if there is a place to get rear tail light housings online for a 2000 ls?

You're gonna need a drivers front fog as well.
I have two old ones that could be clean up you could have if that's the case.
