Like a lot of people, My 2000 v8 sport is stuttering and misfiring. After getting some advice from veterans, I sent it to the Lincoln dealer today, and wrote a note to make sure they replace the Valve cover gaskets, spark plug seals or gaskets, and replace the faulty spark plug and coil. Should be back to normal when it comes back. I heard this is all caused by oil leaking from the valve covers into the spark plugs. We'll see what happens when it comes back, I'll keep you posted.

And....
the worst part
Just got my Mclaren grille(Silver Frost all around, orange insert) :Bang
I was afraid to put it on and then have it go into the shop, can't have my new toy scratched
I need something to do in the meantime... :give

read the threads it will help pass the time. we will mourn with you. Actually mine is in the shop for leaky oil pan.

I think I am going to do the valve cover caper myself.

Yea they replaced the valve cover gaskets, and the faulted spark plug and coil, all covered except 100 buck deductible. Runs perfect.... and installed the Mclaren Grille

I know this thread is old, but how much would or did it cost to have the dealership do all that? (if there was no warranty)

Looking at a past bill for one coil: $100/coil, $204/labor from Lincoln dealer. If I understand coils are not covered under warranty.

yep well over 1k bux and they are not covered by the warranty.
i have had the same problem with the misfires not the oil problem but mis fires do to faulty coils and plugs. you can get the coils from advance auto parts for $49 a piece(has to be ordered and will take 1 day min and 3-4 days max depending on where it's being shipped from) and o'reillys has it for $39 and it's a stocked item. they are simple to replace.

Wow! A thousand dollars??

My sent my son's LS8 to the dealer for a misfire and a hard start. I didn't have time to look at it then. They said it was the #4 coil and charged me almost $300 to replace it. Didn't fix it. I finally took the time and diagnosed it as a leaky injector. I replaced all 8 injectors, both v/c gaskets and seals, and all 8 plugs and it cost me $600 in parts...and all Ford parts! Make some calls and check with your dealers. I used my Ford SVT dealer who really treats me right. For example, he charged me $60 each for the injectors...and they retail for $100. When it comes to sensitive ignition and fuel parts, it's scary at best buying aftermarket because they consolidate part numbers so much.

Oh..by the way...my son was soooo pissed that they charged me $300 and didn't fix a thing that he called Lincoln...they called the dealer...and they cut me a check back!! How about that! I didn't even get a chance to bitch before he had it handled!

I am no mechanic by any means so i will try to find someone reasonable and honest. How did you find out the problem was a leaky injector? Did the computer spit that out or you just knew from experience?

Is there any way you can tell which coil it is? I don't have a check engine light on so i doubt anything will come up on the computer. OR is there any other possible reasons for it stuttering around 45mph and 80 mph?

Yeah I bought a set from AZ several months ago and two of the three I bought go bad. So I ended up buying the OEMs.

I see you are from SC. I lived in Charleston a few years ago. I was I the Navy and stayed fro a few years after I got out. My Mother lives on some farm land out in St George. A good buddy of mine, a shipmate from the Navy, lived out in Orangeburg but he moved down to Orlando. we used to hit a BBQ place out there that was only open on the weekend. man that was great BBQ. Earl Dukes BBQ is the resturant.

I miss the BBQ but not the no see em's.

Welcome aboard and thanks for joining the SE Chapter. You are one of only 2 or 3 SC members. We will try to get some more folks to hang with out there as soon as we can beau.

For those not familiar at least when I was there folks called each other beau sort of like "homie" for the south so vyper is not my beau. :D

Usually has to be visually inspected or a trained ear can tell by listening to them.

Some times the DTC, diag trouble code, will point the fingure at the coil but not many pcm scan tools can read the codes that are in a pending area in the computer. So you have to drive the car and try to trap it while the check engine light is flashing.

The dealers can diag the prblem for you for about 100 bux so if you are up to turning a few wrenches you can fix it yourself. It really is an easy job, just takes some time a basic tool set. Plus you get free online tech support.

The ECM had a misfire code for #4...that was the only thing I got from the ECM. The dealer replaced the coil and that wasn't it. The biggest clue was the car was hard to start after it was warmed up and heat soaked for an hour. It took several cranks and then started on one cylinder at a time. I can't believe the dealer diagnosed a coil for this! Anyway, I suspected fuel problems by the way it started. I have a fuel pressure guage that I can hook up in series at the fuel rail connection. It has shut off valves so I can isolate fuel pressure from either side of the rail. I pressurized the system then shut off the fuel so it read pressure on the rail side. When it was cold, it held just fine. I opened the valve and started the car and let it run for half an hour or so. I let it sit for a bit and repressurized and isolated the rail. Bingo! Pressure fell off like a cheap hookers panties! I pulled the rail, but left the fuel line hooked up (I disconnected the injector plugs.) I pressurized the rail again and watched the injectors. # 4 leaked. I decided to just replace them all at the same time to avoid another problem down the road.
