If you ain't got the money for a driveshaft and/or chip, I would be hesitant.
I put 4.10s in my '93 confident I would not need a driveshaft. I already had a chip. I just had the exhaust taken to true cat back duals with a single X pipe before the 4.10s.
After the install, I had a shop R&R the fuel pump and change the speedo gear. I drove it very little before then and was concerned the wrong speedo affected the shift points. After I got the car back I noticed for the first time on the highway that a vibration started at 75-80mph. I previously had NO vibration at highway speeds over 120mph.
I really figured I could R&R the u-joints, have it balanced and then I could index it on the car to eliminate the vibes. Afterall, they weren't THAT bad. About that time a group buy for a MMx driveshaft started. I prefer driving my Mark VIII to laying under it, so I spent the moola.
I was thoroughly impressed with the new shaft. It took out vibrations I didn't even know existed! Eventually, I sold my one-piece driveshaft to a Gen2 owner whose '97 had highway speed vibrations. IT cured his problems. Go figure.
Now as far as the chip being a requirement, I ain't sure. Like I said, I already had a chip. BUT you do need to change the speedo gear to the white 23 tooth gear. :wrench
