I have a quick oppertunity to buy a 2000 LS V8 for $12'200. Two owners in Florida only, 63'000 miles. Dealer assures me everything works perfectly and says when I fly in I can take the car to any of 4 local dealerships to have it check over and ANY problems fixed buy him. Sounds like an honest guy. It is the only color I have wanted for this car, Ivory Parchment. Beautiful. Here are my questions for you owners.. ALL comments today are appreciated!!!

Is this a deal?
What should I have checked out when I arrive?
It has 16" tires. What WIDTH of tires will fit on 17" or 18" wheels?
Where do I get a deal on wheels?

I love everything about the 2000 body style. I do not like the 2004 changes, so..

Did Lincoln make exteriour changes to the 2001-2003 models? If so, can I make a 2003 look exactly like a 2000 with parts alone? (or are there body panel changes?)

What is the last year they painted the LS in Ivory Parchment? I do not see it for the 2005's.
Does anyone know the official name and paint code for this color?

Basically, if I don't buy this "perfect looking" 2000 LS today, I want one that looks exactly like it sometime, and time is rusting away on the 2000's. Can I wait for a 2003 in 2 or 3 years? Should I wait? Or is this a deal? Thanks for any answers!!

Actually the major changes to the LS took place in 2003. But I digress...

Make sure you check out the vehicle very well. 63,000 may not seem like alot of miles but in stop and go traffic with a lead foot it can be much worse than 150,000 highway miles. Pay particular attention to the transmission as this is the LS's weak spot.

You can get tires down in the 215 range to fit 17" wheels. Width really is not a limiting factor.

There isn't much you can change on a 03 and newer to make it look pre-03. It really depends on what it is about the 03''s and up you don't like...

BTW, welcome to :V

Thanks for the quick reply. Go Airforce. I'm in the Canadian Airforce myself, flying our country's Search and Rescue helicopter. This would be my first trip down to Florida and I'm a little hesitant to buy a car sight unseen. Is there something specific that might hint to a bad transmission during a test drive?

So it was the 2003 models that went up to 280 horses was it? Good to know. I didn't dig the new tail lights, headlights, or fog lamps. Or anything else external they might have changed, I guess. The 04's are nice.. but the 2000 is perfect in my mind. My options are this.. buy this ideal looking car today, in 2 hours, or wait 2 years for a 2002 to come along. The 2002 would have to be from the southern U.S. (dry climate) and this "ivory parchment clear coat, tri-coat." (I think thats what its called) And the same low price would be nice too. I bought the plane ticket a week ago, but have a few hours to cancel. Thanks to anyone else with an answer to any one of my many questions above. Very happy there is this forum to read for some honest advise on these cars.

I'd say be careful; 63K is a good amount of mileage, and 2000 wasn't exactly the most trouble free year for the car. You can pay a few thousand more to get a 2002 with low mileage for about 15-16K.

Thanks for that. You perhaps just made up my mind. Would you say improvements were made between 2000 and 2002 models? Examples? Anyone? Can anyone confirm that the 2002's still come in ivory parchment. Thanks again. Still watching this thread liek a hawk for 2 hours.

Yes, 2002's came in ivory parchment.

I know what you mean about the mulitcolor taillights...looks kinda like an old accord IMHO.

Go with a 2002 if you can find one. I have a 2000, and have had the valve cover gaskets replaced along with all the coil packs. It was't cheap to do either. If you really want the 2000 you found, check to see if the car has been brought in for blown coil packs multiple times. If so, the gaskets are probably bad. Also, the 2000 cup holder is more of a can holder, even though it looks cool, it hate it.

It seems that 2002 and 2004 are probably the most reliable years for the LS, with the '02 year being the most reliable out of the pre-03 LSes. '02s can be had for just a bit over your price of $12K.

I bought my 2000 LS8 Sport back in November with 51,249 miles on it and havent had one tiny problem yet. Dave Knapp Ford dealership ran background check on it seeing it was bought there orginally and serviced there also and it came back with a couple recalls and airbag light sensor, that was it. I willnt say that 00s are perfect but there seem to be a select few that are and I guess I am one of them.
KNOCK ON WOOD!
Good luck!

-Scott-

ps If you really want it ask for the VIN# and run a carfax report on it, before you fly to sunny, hot, humid, and rainy Florida.

Not really too hateful seeing that it was a 40-46k orginally!

Maybe it's just me, but $12K for a 5 year old car with 63000 miles on it seems like a lot!

put it this way I paid 11995 with 30k miles on my v6, they had a v8 with 39k miles for 14995 with a WARRANTY!!... I think that you are gona want something with a warranty. Ecspecially with all of the problems you MAY encounter.. some get lucky and dont have any problems but with a 2000 being the first yr, you never know...
I would keep looking, you'll find a better deal!

Such good stuff. Thanks guys. I'll pour over the changes Ghost posted. I see a couple of 02 models posted on eBay listed as "Ivory Pearl." I'm guessing they mean the "Ivory Parchment Tri-Coat", or has someone heard of Ivory Pearl as well?

10/21/02 "..SST now allows 1st gear starts in SST mode.."

SST? I think I remember in 2000 the cars would not start off of the line in 1st gear. So if I read above correctly, they changed this on the 2003 model? If so, why the following from Ghost's list..
"..Sep 01 - RPM of 1st to 2nd gear upshift is increased.."

Is there a way to get into first gear for a fast start on a 2000 or 2002?

I'm guessing if somebody says Ivory, Cream, or Pearl they are all talkingabout the same color, Ivory Parchment Tri-Coat.

Yes, if the appropriate amount of pedal is given it will perform a really abrubt "drop" into first allowing you to upshift from 1st. Kinda quirky but I guess that's how they got around the gas-guzzler tax. At least that's the word on the street...

Its paint code HC, ivory parchment pearl tricoat. There was only one other tri coat paint job for the 00 - 02 cars and I think it was a white pearl.

I know of a 2002 Ls v8 with the grey interior and the light silver ext. It has the sport kit and only 12000 miles. I actually drove this one and yes I did return it with a little less rubber on the rears. I was trying to get my inlaws to trade in their pos Jag s-type on it. They decided to go with a 2004 v8 LS for a little more.

The problems with the one above was the front and rear bumpers were scratched and a small dent on rear quarter. It was literally owned by a old guy and locally sold and serviced. I think they were asking $14xxx.00. It had been sitting on their lot for a while.

BTW have you checked about bringing a car back into Canada. It used to be a real bear a while ago. Good luck.

Yea, I did all the research and talked to both sides of the border crossing. I would jump through alot of hoops for my Linclon, but it looks like I'll have to wait a few years to be in the club. Hope you guys don't mind if I stick around and ask a few questions here and there while I wait.
HC is the paint code? Is that Lincoln's identifier for that specific paint type, and is it located on the car somewhere I could have a dealer confirm when I'm shopping? That's not in the VIN# anywhere is it?

Yes, it is fords paint code. My car is painted this color.
The paint code is located on the driver side door jam sticker. You have to open the driver side door to see it, by the front fender.

Just in case you are curious, the eBay item# was 4562683542. Y'all have a look and tell me how nice it was, now that the plane ticket is canceled. His reserve price was $13'000 plus a $300 administration fee. A Day after the auction end and exchanges of pleasantries he was down to $12'200. I would be heading to Florida if it weren't for all of your good advice today. (So I'm greatful, and I'm not, if you get my drift) I really appreciate all of the help and I look foreward to picking your brains for the next while.

Im guessing your in Hollywood, CA and not Hollywood, FL. If you see a car in the Tampa area I could check it out for you. I used to live hear Hollywood and occasionally head down there. Let us know if you need more help looking.

It is a nice looking car. Looks just like the one my wife took from me. Yes...we are still married. :) I paid $12,900 for it about 9 months or so ago and it had about 67k on it, I believe. The car was near perfect in shape but I did have to do the valve cover job (which led me to doing the tech page on it).

You can find one just like it again. That was no real SPECIAL deal, but I wouldn't say it was a bad deal either.

It was wise not to rush into it. I did a Buy It NOW on my LS sport. I will never buy a car site unseen again. I am too picky. It took me several months to get everything right on that LS. I am glad I have it now though. :)

I think I might still have some time left on my unlimited carfax account (it was good for 1 month). You're more than welcome to send some VINs my way and I can send you the carfaxes.
