My radio starting to mute itself this morning. Did a little research and could be the clockspring? The steering wheel radio control work correctly. Taking it in Monday to have it checked.

Possibly clockspring

The clock spring also controls the cruise control and other radio cd controls. It maybe just starting to go out, the airbag light comes on with a 3-2 signal also. clockspring cost $150, you can diy in about an hour if you have the right tools. Not too hard a job.:)

After a day at the shop they couldn't get it to repoduce the problem. The scheduled another appt for today so they could give me a loaner and keep the LS for a few days to see if they could get it to do it.

In the week between appts, the randomness has stopped. The problem is now that the volume and media steering wheel buttons mute the radio. The steering wheel mute does nothing.

So its now at the shop and I've got a Ford Five Hundred for a loaner.

If this is the clockspring, that's upsetting on a 2006 with 8000 miles.

i keep hearing people having the same issues, and replacing the clockspring isn't fixing it.. and i've read in past threads the head-unit is what needs to be replaced.. hope that helps

The car is fixed, but I don't have much confidence in it. They claim that the problem was the actual radio buttons on the steering wheel shorting out. They mentioned the clock spring, and they said they tested that and verified the airbag function.

I just find it hard to believe that the buttons that I NEVER use, would be a problem.

We’ll see.
