Need to confirm...

I start the car after it cools down.... Say 2 hours or more....and I get a nasty rattle for 3 seconds... It then is quiet as can be... I can rev to 6 grand and no problems....

I'm assuming primary tensioners.... Since they run off oil pressure... Secondaries make noise all the time right?

A little rattle from the front of one valve cover or the other would point to timing chain tensioners. I think that it could be primary or secondary.

Otherwise, it could be that you have the wrong oil (too thick) or the wrong (or bad) oil filter.

Phatcat,

I have a 2006 with exactly the same symptom. No idea what is casing it. Did you resolve it somehow?

Kirk,
The last oil/filter changes were done at the Lincoln dealer, so I assumed it was a Motorcraft filter. I'll check that, thanks.

Pm joegr for a solid idea of what you have on on your hands.

actually my Expedition does this too, never figured it out... sounds horrible though

So does our expy. Had it 9 years and it has always done it. I was told it was clearance in the jugs till the engine warmed up enough to expand the pistons and such. Just my 2 cents

I would check oil pressure with separate guage in all these situations. I have changed oil & filter within 500 miles to clean out system to fix this rattle on other vehicles. Cheap oil filters can collapse inside restricting flow/pressure. Might change oil pressure switch?

I had a BMW that did this like crazy and I thought it was the timing chain but that didn't help. Turned out to be the starter pinion not retracting after releasing the key. I took the starter off and cleaned and lubed it. Problem solved.
