I bought my 01 LS V8.I have replaced the VCG,all coils and plugs, TPS sensor , All four o2 sensors , Mass air flow sensor too. After changing all these parts my car was still ideling rough. So I took it to the dealership . Thay have had it now for 12 days and finally told me that ford engineers were there working on my car cause they could not figure out what is wrong with my car. They now think my car has skipped timing . Is this something that any of you have heard of ? Please let me know what you all think. Also Just to let you know off idel my car runs great no spit sputter no hesation or anything like that . MPG is 17 city and 24 highway. Any sugestions would be great . Oh all the sensors that are on this 3.9 are good too that is the first thing they checked..

They should not need Ford Engineers to tell if it has skipped timing. Take it to another shop.

Did you buy this car from a dealer or private seller?

I'll second that. I'd have guessed idle air bypass long before jumped timing; jumped timing should show itself throughout the RPM range, not just at idle. It's been almost twenty years since it happened, but when my old F100 jumped timing, it was incredibly noticeable. It had no power and it ran like a pig, coughing and sputtering when you gave it any gas. The LS's computer can make up for a lot, but if you've jumped timing, there's not a lot the computer can do, because you now have the valves opening at the wrong times.

Ford engineers?? LOL they mean the grease monkey mechanics at the dealership?

no kidding, since when do "Ford engineers" make special trips to dealerships to look at discontinued models out of warranty? Silly dealerships.

Better make sure to ask for some lube while they bend you over and F you in the A.

Figuratively speaking of course.

Those same "engineers" are at this moment trying to find where the dipstick to check his blinker fluid is located.

after week and a half the dealership tells me that my exhaust cam is 20 degrees off time? Anyone hear of this?

Ive heard of it. I don't see how it took them a week and a half to figure that out, but its certainly possible.
Not as common with timing chains as it is with belts, but it could be done if the engine were over-revved for a long period of time. If the engine is allowed to bounce off the rev limiter repeatedly it will cause the chain to deflect more than normal which would push the tensioner in and let the chain go slack for a split second until the tensioner springs back.
In a brand new engine its not usually a problem. But on one with fairly high mileage the tensioners may be worn or loose and this scenario could happen.
