Rear view mirror - tint coming off

Guys:

Really hot day the other day and I noticed the rear view mirror looked like it had a tint film that was peeling. I can't feel anything, but the top bit is much brighter than the rest.

Anyone had this? How do I either remove or correct?

It's not tint; it's the liquid crystals that do the electrochromatic dimming (the mirror is like an LCD, but the LCs are used to dim the mirror). AFAIK, the only solution to the problem is to replace the mirror, and I'm told that the factory unit is not inexpensive (as rear-view mirrors go).

man, ive got that same problem i think, do the darker spots move around
 
re/re = remove and replace.

Yes, the spots will change position as the liquid crystal material moves around. Get ready for a large expense to replace that mirror.
 
There are actually more then a few posts already on this. But I would suggest going to a car recylcing place and get a auto dimming mirror with compass off a newer vehicle ( i got mine off a tauras) and put it on. Just make sure its newer then 2002. This was a big problem with 2000-2001. It takes nothing to install.
New was going to cost me almost $300 canadian for NO compass and $450 canadain for one with compass. I bought one used for $60 with the compass. Took nothing to install.
 
Can you validate took nothing to install. How do I take the old one off?

There is a U shaped clip.(on my 2000 ls anyways) you take that off with a screw driver and the mirror falls off. The new one will probably be a slide on. So you slide the new one on. As for the the wires, make sure you have the plastic plug for the compass mirror which the wires plug into the mirror. DO NOT CUT THE WIRES OFF. Insert a small pick or screwdriver to release the little tab that locks them in. Do this to your lincoln plug and make sure that you put them in the same location as the ones that you took out.(compass mirror that is). On the lincoln plug I think there the wires are numbered 1-2-3
and the compass mirror is 1-2-3-4-5-6-7. I will have to post back later on the exact wiring here which number goes where. It may be already be on this site somwhere.
 
So a 2002 and up Taurus mirror will slip right in? I have an 00 LS Sport as well.
 
Mine was out of a 2003. But imagine its the exact same. The wiring was so simple. I forgot to mention I had a little vibration in the mirror when driving down the road so I bend a piece of thin steel and inserted it between the mirror mount and the steel wedge bracket ( could probably get away with plastic) jsut something to apply some pressure to it). Now its as good as new. The compass is so nice. Not to mention the auto-dimmer is better quality.
