Replace fuel pump on 2002 LS myself?

Engine light stayed on.
Took to dealer.
They want $920.00 parts and labor.
New pump off internet $167.00.
I have done most of the repairs on my past cars.
Does anyone know of any problems with doing this or have any instructions of what it will take?
I figure it will mean removing or lowering the tank.

The dealer said he could reset the light but wouldn't know how long it would stay off. If the light comes back on, and I replace the pump myself, will the dealer have to reset the light again or is there a way I can do it?

I haven't had any other problems with the car and now have 137,000 miles.
Plan on getting many more, then giving it to my son.
Great car, don't know why anyone would want more for family car.

QuikLS recently did a fantastic write up on how to do it on the LLSOC board. It's complete with pictures. If you are a member there, you can access it. You may want to PM him and see if he can help you out. I read over it quickly and it looks like you don't have to drop the tank. You can access it by removing the back seat.

That's true, once you remove the rear seat, the pump is right there.

I just had both the fuel pump and the jet pump replaced at my local dealer this week. The cost was $800. It is recommended that you replace both pumps at the same time. The top fuel pump is located under the passenger side rear seat. If you have a mechanics guide you can use it to do the fuel pump replacement. I don't know where the jet pump is located.

the 'jet-pump' is under the rear-seat on the driver's side - it is the pump that move fuel from the driver's side of the saddle gas tank to the passenger side - where the fuel pump is located.

You replace it the same way.

You replace both because the is no way to determine which one is falling below delivery specs - one pumps into the other and then to the fuel rail.

Hey Quik...just out of curiosity..how come there apparently is a writeup on LLSOC, but not on the Tech Articles area here? Im sure it would be helpful to a lot of folks here.

simple - there are six years of technical articles - 100's of them - on LLSOC.

if we simply cross-post everything evrywhere then there is no point in having seperate sites with unique flavors. the LLSOC is a non-profit 501.c - so their membership fees go solely to running the club - no other source of income.

I will help anyone I can and will always be careful to not to hurt any of the many forums I belong to by watering down their uniqueness.

Thanks for all the info....

So far the light has stayed off after the dealer reset it.

Cost $65, ok to find out what might be defective.
Found out that Auto Zone will check codes for nothing.
Problem may have been because of low fuel. Low fuel light had been on for several miles, but I have gone much further with it on before.
I'm just going to wait and see if it comes back on.
The dealer's quote was to replace both pumps.
