Okay, I wasn't going to say anything about this, but it is bugging me. If you have done this, then your car is unsafe and the fuel lines may pop off of the filter at any moment.
You need to understand that just because the clips didn't come with the filter, it doesn't mean you don't need them. They don't go on the filter, they go on the fuel lines on the car. Unless you have changed your fuel lines, then you must have the clips. (If you use the correct release tool, there is no need to remove the clips, and therefore no need to replace them, but that doesn't sound like what you were trying to say.)
If you can pull the fuel lines off of the filter without using a release tool or removing the clips, then you have done it wrong, and the lines may pop off at any time.
Again, there is no way that any change in the filter could remove the need for the clips. The only possible way to do that would be to change the fuel lines and the filter both to something non-stock.
