Secondary Tensioners

I dont think this applies to the ford 3.9 version at all.

How prone are Gen IIs to tensioner failure?

The info on that page is good. However, their prices are outrageously higher than anyone else. Shop around, particularly on ebay, for a better deal.

Found this online, thought it may be useful to some.

Notice the difference in the cams on the 4.0 and the 3.9. The flats on the Jag 4.0 are not the same as the (Ford) 3.9. There is an extra ridge (if you will) on the 3.9. Unfortunately on the Jag pic shown from your link the flats are not shown (engine in the wrong position). I think I have a pic showing the flats on the 4.0. (found it! it is pictured below)

Maybe someone can answer this for me. I ordered a 303-530 cam positioning tool from an Ebay auction stating it fits all Jag 4.0's from 97-07. Well the one I bought did not. It looked identical to the one in the pictures and OTC's site as well. It was not a genuine OTC product so I thought that this (homemade) one was machined wrong.

I'm still perplexed because I don't have the true measurements from an OTC 303-530. If someone has one will you be willing to send me the specs. I as well as the person selling that tool on Ebay needs to know. The shop manual says 303-530 for the app.

The 4 pics below show; the pic from your link, a pic I had from the Ebay seller (jag 4.0), my 2001 and 2002 3.9. They should be in order as described.

There is a difference between the 01 & 02 3.9 intake cam. Does anyone know why? I'm assuming it is for balance or dampening.

I had some trouble with the positioning tool that I used. Couldn't use the middle bolt, appears I had to mount it in the opposite position as intended. Worked fine, but not as "solid" as a hold as intended.

So the ford 3.9 engines are affected by this as well??

Mines starting to go. 80,000. Just a light ticking at this time. Will be doing this operation here very soon so I don't get caught off guard and have to pull the heads.

AFAIK, a light tick is normal for OHC/OHV engines..

It is getting louder. I use to have a tick that turned out to be a bad injector and another small tick that turned out to be a bad coil. This tick is getting louder as the months go by. Or maybe I am going crazy thinking something is always wrong with this car.

Seems like after a lengthy search that I have a secondary tensioner going bad. From what I read, the primaries make the clunk.

dont assume that.

a bad idler pulley or belt tensioner can make a similar sound.

My first post, and where Im at currently in repairs.

The wifes 01 has been missing for some time now and it finally started throwing codes.
Then it really started rattling and shaking at idle.

Good thing I took it off the road.

Here is a video of the rattling.

Here is where I am at the moment. Installed two new secondary tensioners, and noticed the left chain is stretched, and the cam is out of time.

Had to buy a chain breaker yesterday, so maybe today I can get the chain out.

This is the old tensioner and how bad it had gotten.

And here is how much the chain is stretched and cam out of time.

Is this the norm around here? I post some pics of my motor and they get moderated "before" their posted?

When you post direct links as your first post? Probably some sort of spam security software.
