Secondary Tensioners

My first post, and where Im at currently in repairs.

The wifes 01 has been missing for some time now and it finally started throwing codes.
Then it really started rattling and shaking at idle.

Good thing I took it off the road.

Here is a video of the rattling.

If its misfiring, replace all coils and spark plugs.

you may also want to do the valve cover gaskets and make sure the belt tensioner, belt, and idler pulley are still good.

He has some posts on another LS forum. It's the tensioners/chains.

nm then.

well i guess i know what it sounds like now.

Notice how the secondary cam is out of time too.

I replaced both secondary tensioners and last night I replaced the left chain, and rolled the cam back. Now I have to figure out how to find the dipstick hole.

Found it!

Took the cage off of my work light and stuck the bulb way down between the fender and the motor and looked just over the fender as low as I could get my head and you can see the hole. Whew.

Well she fired up. No more rattle.:)

Lets see,

Rockauto Felpro gaskets, $50
Ebay Secondary chain tensioners, $152
Ebay Secondary chain, $60
Frustration, sore fingers & cussing, priceless

Im thinking of buying one of the OTC injector cleaners from Amazon for $100.

I have to wonder what a dealer would have charged to do this job.
I know the second time we had the valve cover gaskets replaced it was $700:eek:

i will be starting 2morrow. just got my parts and locking tools... any useful tips...

that tensioner is upside down, in the other pics its proper, but that spring loaded clyinder should be facing down, shouldnt it? im just asking because im in the middle of this contstruction myself!!! and my secondary, the spring was facing to the bottom of the motor not the top! schematics also same as mine, let me kno, thank you..
Here is where I am at the moment. Installed two new secondary tensioners, and noticed the left chain is stretched, and the cam is out of time.

Had to buy a chain breaker yesterday, so maybe today I can get the chain out.

This is the old tensioner and how bad it had gotten.

And here is how much the chain is stretched and cam out of time.

depends on which side of the motor you are working on.
on side points up, the other down.

they are left and right side specific.

here you can see they look a little different.

ahh, right on, did not know that, thanks for the info, learn something new everyday

just another quick question, okay so clearly my secondary tensioner is dinked, but also, is my timing out? i kno with the tensioner out there is slack in the secondary chain, as shown in the image, but even when i apply tension, my cams arent parallel... they are close tho, i would think if it jumped a tooth it would be more out of wack! and last, does anyone kno the torque specs for the cam "bearings" or what ever they are called, not sure the specific name, also the pattern to tighten and torque-spec for the valve cover! any advice would be greatly appreciated!

This just makes me shiver all over as I know I'll eventually be in the same boat. (GEN I)

I best get those VCG and upgraded Tensioners ordered.

lmao!!! just that secondary tensioner was just under 300$ but at least im not having to replace the whole motor......yet!

I think you overpaid, that's not the prices I saw on those but now I am double checking that of course.

You really have to check the cam flats with the chain tensioned. If the chain is not tight, then the flats won't ever line up properly.

How did it run before you took it apart? It certainly looks like it may have skipped a tooth. But it is hard to tell without being there.

A set of the updated tensioners is like 150+shipping from Christopher's foreign car parts.

deff think i overpaid aswell! none of the speedshops here could get me the part, and just registered for paypal so waiting for the funds to swap over from my account, and really cant be out of a car for the period of time waiting on parts, that being said, i had to buy from the dealer... actual total out the door 316.00...for a the secondary tensioner, trust me, im not impressed either lol

deffinatly wish i had a second vehicle, so i could have waited on parts! and lmao!!! i dont kno how it ran! the whole bank 2 was misfiring other then clyinder 4, and rude slapping from the secondary chain, half the time she didnt wanna start, but when running and driving, ran great until under load at like a stop light or stop sign. mechanic who scooped it could not believe it was running

okay, so that being said, how do i kno which cam is either retard or advanced without having to tear down the other half of the motor lol!!! i gotta get this thing running by 2mor0, i would assume it would be the cam closest to the exhaust manifold...
yep, certainly sounds like the timing jumped.

im assuming that since my bank 1 is running strong, and the main bank 2 timing belt is run from the crank, to the intake cam on bank 2, chances are that one is fine, and its my exhaust cam that has altered positions?
