Select Shift?

Why are SST LS's 'handicapped', we can start in 1st with D4/D5 as well eh?

And you non-SST guys can modify your car to have it, it's just a matter of adding the right wires/parts in the right places (but I'm not the guy to ask about that).

I love my SST mode, charge down a nice on-ramp in 3rd gear, keep it above 3000rpm, and gradually feeding in the throtle as the ramp straightens out is soooo awesome.

I heard something about emissions or something in states the run the cars on wheel dynos for testing since they had to test them in SST mode... I think I also heard that they are no longer required to test in SST so the 03 and later vehicles will start in 1st when in SST.

The cadi was fun since i did it twice once from a dead stop the first time rolling about 20. It was something to see the thing chirping all 4 wheels with its AWD.

in pre-03 cars Ford needed to pass what is called a CAFE (corporate average fuel economy) test - very narrow test by the government designed for manual shifting cars. They had to start the car in second gear to qualify it into the category they needed.

in 03, the new engine/trannie combo was more fuel efficient - so the car could qualify in 1st.

No 1st in sst?

I've got an '02 LSE with Select Shift and I can't get my tranni into first gear using the SS. Does anyone know how to make this happen? I'm hoping that there is some way to override this 2nd gear start.
I don't understand,my 2003 starts off in 1st no problems, maybe the previous owner had something done.Is there something wrong with my LS?If so I'm not going to fix it.

read my post above - it was a pre-03 issue, the 03+ engine were more efficient so could pass the CAFE test while in 1st.
