Is it possible to, instead of a cat-back setup, to run a true dual exhaust system on these things?

Really?

Its already true duals from factory. Are you talking about gutting the cats and running headers with straight pipes?

All LS's have separate pipes from each cat to the rear mufflers from the factory.

No, what I'm talking about is eliminating the crossover pipe completely. Can that be done?

Why would you? It's there to improve power and mileage. The exhaust flow pulses from each bank helps pull out the exhaust from the other bank.

You can, but there would be no benefit to doing so. There is a reason they have been "crossing" dual exhaust pipe for the last thirty years.

Usually true duals with no crossover make it sound like somebody is shooting a machine gun when you drive by, not a good sound for an LS or anything else for that matter.

Is it possible
it is always possible to do what ever you want with an exhaust set up if you build it yourself. the real question is, are you doing the right thing.

also for some LSes, there is a cat, that is the crossover pipe.

I guess I'm used to being able to rev the engine when it's in park or neutral. To me, it sounds too 'refined'. When I get into the throttle, it sounds good, but at rest, I want my car to sound like it has testicular fortitude.

Educate yourself a bit on the LS.

Its a small V8, will not sound cammed or like a pushrod motor and it does not rev past 3K due to the rev limiter.

If your motor doesn't sound cammed you may be driving a Mazda... :)

I know about the rev limiter. I just think it's a crap idea. I miss the look on the driver's face when he realizes he's putting his rice-burning 4-banger against something that has 4 more cylinders.

And even a small V8 can sound like it has a pair...

Wellll..... You DID buy a luxury car, NOT a muscle car.

What Josh said, it's not a cross over, it's just a pair of hydroformed plates that are welded together to form the ' )( ' looking crossover to hold both exhaust pipes from moving. I did a true X pipe on mine, 2.25" at the cat to 2.5" past the X, really didn't make a huge difference in sound. The stock pipes are 2" after the connector plate. I need to do another video as my mufflers finally settled in.

This is from August.

That is not a cat, nor a cross-over.

sorry to inform you guys but that is not true 100% of the time

there are two different styles that i have seen in person, first is the flat plate the you mention ranchero. where the two pipes come close but that are not connected but just held together. there the is the version where there are three catalytic converters, where instead of that flat plate, there is a third big chamber with the exact same honeycomb material inside of it, i know this because when my last set of coils failed, I had to drive it farther than i should have and clogged them up, so i had to remove it from the car and hollow them out to get the motor to stay running. and since i actually removed the same stuff from all three sections, i know what it is.

when Joe post repair manual pictures on here, those pictures look exactly like what my car has and not what a friend of mine had on his LS.

Look all over youtube and ask us...its just not a loud V8. Its a British engine.

Actually, it is a cat.

Exactly.
