SIRIUS or XM ???

Just currious.. what's everyone opioniun on SIRIUS vs XM? Also do they both offer portable receivers and how well do they work. Is anyone using the units with the built in RF transmitters? How well do these work? Do they work better then the crappy ones that are available for the Apple iPod?

I have the SIR.....Im looking into getting the portable one it looks so much better than the xm one.....the unit I have in my car works thru the fm transmitter and its golden.....so ....I am going to get a hold of the sirius portable its the SH!T
 
Sirius will have Howard...so if I get either, I'll get Sirius.
 
I've had Sirius for about a year now and I really like it. The fact that Howard is coming is great, but theres a lot of good stations on it for any kind of music plus the NFL. They are coming out with a portable unit this month I think, but from what I've heard, you won't actually be able to listen to the radio unless it's in its docking station, but you can still have MP3's and record songs off of the sattelite.
As for the RF transmitter, the one for the car unit is pretty clear. However the one for the home docking station is amazing. I can transmit to any radio in my house and even as far as my driveway and street. I highly recommened Sirius of the 2 companies.
 
I had XM for a year and recently changed to Sirius. Mainly because Sirius had the lifetime deal and the Factory Ford unit was Sirius. I don't think there is a lot of difference in the actual quality of the music. XM used to be less expensive, but recently raised their rates to equal Sirius. So, you make the choice.

I have the Sportster and pay the $12 a month for now. I might just pay for lifetime eventually when I get some money.
 
Your '05 is Sirius-ready; tell your dealer you want the dealer-installed Sirius option. If you're within so many days (30? 90?) of your purchase of the car, it's still under the factory warranty, and the Sirius unit is dealer-installed, it's supposed to be covered under the 4/50 bumper-to-bumper warranty (though you'll want to get your dealer to confirm this).

I have the dealer-installed Sirius, and I love it. I don't give a flying fig about Howard Stern; I'm in it for Radio Margaritaville. :D

Just listen once, and you'll admit it's you own damn fault...
 
I have a factory SAT ready radio and I installed XM. They have baseball compared to Sirius having the NFL. Since I have the NFL Sunday Ticket at the house, I won't be listening to football games on the radio. But XM has one HUGE advantage in my opinion. Their traffic reports for the major cities is AMAZING. Not only that, you can get their XMTraffic that "downloads" to some of the NAV units automatically to pop up trouble spots.

Howard Stern is the best reason I can give you to go to XM.
 
One issue with the lifetime option from Sirius is that it is only good for the particular unit you sign up with. So, if you decide to upgrade later it does not transfer. I looked at that option when I first got mine a couple of years ago. However, I just pay the yearly dues because as newer units come out I want the flexibility to change the units. I have a smaller unit now that I need to install and get rid of the plug and play unit I have.

I have always said that once you get satellite radio you'll never listen to the conventional radio again. Out of the last two years I have only listened to the regular radio a couple of times and it was to listen to the UT football game.

Oh man Gray....you must have had a lot of heartburn this year!

I did see where you just got a new offensive coordinator.

Now, if 'Bama can do the same...their play calling since the game with the Vols has been horrible. Anyone who would let Croyle get sacked that many times should be fired. I wonder if they even know what a hot route is???

Not to hijack the thread but UT football was a huge disappointment this year. Bringing back David Cutcliffe as the offensive coordinator might be a mistake but we'll see.

Yes!!! That's absolutely right and it makes the lifetime substription completely useless unless you plan on keeping your same car and radio for 10 years and the existing radio never fails.

Good topic, thanks for the advice and posts.

I'm considering getting an 06 LS and would like the Sat Radio option. However, my understanding is that the antenna is located on the outside of the car above the rear window. I recall reading on this board (I think) that
some independent shops can install a "hidden" satellite antenna under the dash. Can the Lincoln dealer do the same? I would rather not have an ugly black antenna on my new veeehicle!

There was a change in this option. You are now allowed 3 changes in units under the lifetime deal. BTW it is set to expire in Jan 06. At least for now after Jan 06 there will no longer be a lifetime $500.00 deal at Sirius. I signed up for this after they modified the contract to allow the three changes.

That's good to know. When I signed up a couple of years ago they had stipulations. I may opt for the lifetime when I add the new unit I got.

I don't think the antenna looks that bad; I think I posted a picture of mine around here somewhere. (I know I have a few posted at LLSOC, too.) A few of the guys around here have posted that they have hidden antenna installs, and some just have them on the package shelf or on the dashboard, and they seem to be doing well with their reception.

This may have something to do with their location, and the relative locations of the terrestrial repeaters for Sirius and XM. I know that my antenna is on the roof, and I lose signal when I go under the drive-through at the bank, so I don't think there's a Sirius repeater near me, although there's at least one XM repeater in this area.

The factory antenna is a little bigger than the ones that come with after market Sat radios, but it does not look too bad if you are sure to get it centered right. I did not have good luck with other locations off the roof of the car. On trips, I would lose signal a lot more than now that it is on the roof. I suspect that if you are where there are repeaters, the package shelf would work, but in my case it just did not work out.:)
 
Anyone ever tried mounting it in the sun/moon roof? Making a bracket so you can still open it.
 
i recently got the sirius starmate unit. I love it. I acquired 2 car kits and a house kit so i can use the one radio everywhere (except my wife's car, which came with factory sirius, which is what got me hooked in the first place).

On the Lincoln, I installed it as suggested by Sirius, on the roof. It really doesn't look bad at all. In my volvo, however, I tossed it on the back interior deck and found it works perfect, so that's now its permanent spot. Kind of wish I had tried that in the Lincoln.

As far as mounting it near the moonroof, I did contemplate this for a while and tried to see how it would work, but I could not run the wire safely into the car from that location, so gave up the idea.
 
Thanks for the posts about the antenna.

If I do mount the antenna on the roof, I will probably get it painted to match the color of the (new) car. I know several people here have had success with this.
 
definatly serius they got howard and every football game and if they got every football game i am SOLD
 
im painting mine soon ....I know with putting it inside that sometimes I have trouble with getting signal...but then again somtimes I loose it when I drive under a lot of trees....I love my sirius...I listen to raw dog alot and laught my ass off....
