Slow take off after driving

Hi guys,

I have read different articles that pertain to the gas pedal not responding quick enough when you push the gas all the way down. I know this can be as easy as a fix as just looking at the little wires that touch the carbon sensor which tell your car to go...

The issue my car is having is as follows:
When I am going over 25 mph, If I hit the pedal to the floor the car feels like it is bogged down to wear it wont take off right away - it takes literally about 1-2 seconds before it will take off.

Would this be a Massive Air Sensor issue, or has anyone had experience with this that they could tell me of? I have already replaced spark plugs and ignition coils, I did it because of a misfire, I thought it may help this but it didn't.

Any words of wisdom are very much appreciated from this guy!
 
I would guess that it's more transmission related. Have you tried it using SST?

Manual shift mode of the transmission, if you have a sport model. Push the shifter to the right and then use push up and down to change gears.
 
Yeah I have a luxury version. THe RPM's dont go up at all until the car actually takes off. If it was a transmission problem wouldn't the rpm's go up?

Again, I don't know a whole lot but I figured someone on here would know what i was talking about

Those aren't exclusive options. It is possible (some years anyway) to have luxury sport.

Anyway, the PCM has control over the transmission and the engine throttle (I am assuming you have a gen II because of your comments about the pedal sensor). It can hold off on opening the throttle if the transmission is not ready.

Are you talking about a lag that happens every time, or just under some circumstances? Mine will have a lag when I have done something to confuse it, like slowing down and then suddenly flooring it. To me, the lag is while the transmission is deciding what to do.

You can basically feel that the car knows you are pushing down the pedal, but it just holds off like it isn't getting enough juice to floor it. Not sure how else to explain it really. Do dealers know if you car needs a PCM or do you just do it?

I have had all new coils and sparks - my car has 103k miles, its a v6 04...

Wish I could explain it better, but it just feels like it is "charging" up getting ready to fly while you are driving. Like i said if I do it from take off it is fine, but if I am just cruising at 25 and up and i hit it down it takes some time to respond.

Try cleaning the MAF sensor; buy the MAF cleaner from your local parts store. After cleaning, pull the negative terminal on the battery for a half hour or so to reset the PCM and then hook it all up and drive it around for a while to relearn everything. This worked for me; GenII v8 Sport.
 
Thanks. do you know where the MAF sensor is exactly? I know this sounds dumb, but I tried finding it on ford parts to get a description since I am not really a mechanic.

I would say it's more likely to be an issue with the MAF or the transmission rather than an problem with your converters. If the cats were plugged you'd probably have issues more consistent rather than just when you punch it...

that being said, the MAF should be inline with your air intake, right after the air filter box. And I believe disconnecting the battery could help your transmission too as it has to re-learn how you drive
 
So I just had the following codes come up on my car:

P2104 - Throttle Actuator Control System
P0223 - Throttle Position Sensor/APP (Accel. Pedal)
P0122 - Throttle Position Sensor

Not sure what the difference is with the last two but here is my question:

Should I replace all of these parts or does one of these parts cause the rest to malfunction?

A marginal COP (often #4) can cause those error codes to come up. Otherwise, it should just be the gas pedal assembly.
I'd replace all coils and plugs first.
 
I replaced all of the coils and plugs. Are you saying COP #4 usually causes this? I have a v6 so that would be the plug closet to me on the right.

Since I have replaced all of that - what should I do to go about fixing this code? Replace all of those, or start with what one first?

Sorry. The V6 would be #3, but any of the others could do it. Unfortunately, you have a pretty difficult to diagnose issue without changing parts or using instrumentation that you probably don't have.
If you have access to a good scan tool, monitor the gas pedal position sensors and verify that they are in sync and that the readings go up and down smoothly as you move the gas pedal. If they do, then I think that the coil theory is a good one. If they don't then it might actually be the gas pedal assembly.
 
I'm curious where you bought the coils from (and how long ago). Unless they are new motorcrafts from a dealer (online can be suspect), you may not be able to rule it out.
