Snow tires? Yes or no.

How many of you use snow tires? My dad owned the car before me and he says he never had any trouble in the snow. I came across some nice Goodyear snow tires, I am thinking of putting them on.

last winter we had 2 ft of snow drop as our first snow fall, i spent 10 min reving at 3k without going more than 30-40 ft, threw it in reverse and parked it at the house, got the front wheel drive out, and called it a day.

GET SNOW TIRES!

an rwd car without snow tires? The most important thing to remember about winter tires is the rubber compound is designed not to freeze at very low temperatures. All season tires freeze at much higher temperatures, destroying their grip and rendering them dangerous.
As a Canadian (who has also lived in Boston) i know a little bit about snow tires. you definitely need them.

:I snow tires, keep track asst on and oh, yeah..... I almost forgot,
about 10 cinderblocks in the trunk. lololo

You only need trac and weight if you cant drive ;) ,jk.

IMO you just need them to be able to move.

Many people say all-seasons are fine for snow, but ask them if they've actually used snow tires in the last 5 years. The technology is really good now and let me tell you, they make a huge difference.

i'll tell my mom u said that :p

yeh, i would say get a beater but my dad gets the truck and so that leaves the lincoln or the camaro. no one touches that in the winter... i wont allow it!

I haven't used snow tires since the 1970's. I guess they would be ok.

I've had Rear Wheel Drive vehicles for a long time. I haven't had a problem driving in snow... But I do take more precaution than when driving on dry roads.

But I also don't have high performance tires that would maybe be more slippery in wet or snowy situations.

I would guess that snow tires would be better - it would only be logical...

I live in Wisconsin and we do get a little of snow here in the winter.

Well, this is my only car. There's the Blazer, which the Mrs. drives, and a rear wheel drive Monte Carlo. This car should be better than the Monte since it has traction assist. So snow tires it is! Should I do all 4? Go for that mud machine look...lol

Bridgestone Blizzak REVO 1 are great. Had on my Grand Marque, best winter tires I have seen short of studs. Lasted only 12K but wow!

Have not driven the 98 LSC in the snow yet but i suspect they will be a requirement if you want to stay on the road.

Never used snow tires and I have always drove rwd cars. Its all a matter of your ability to drive and how cautious you are. I think snow tires are just as bad as having 4 wheel drive, its a confidence booster and then you end up in the ditch! Personally, its snowing and I'm still driving with d/r's! Stopping is a bit scary but I can handle it:eek:

My main concern is that my street is downhill from the main road, and I have seen many people get stuck going up the hill, one of them was a friend with a mustang. I didn't have any trouble last year with the front wheel drive contour.

Yea, I hear ya over there in Canada Land... Get pretty nasty ones here in NW michigan too.

Snow tires and 4WD in the wrong hands definately does not improve the ability of the vehicle to be maintained in a controllable manner. They are an AID, not a CURE for the slimy roads. Still gotta use the thing stuck to your shoulders by your neck in order to stay outta ditches and remain safe.

I have 4wd on my Jimmy.. even with it, I dont go flying around on the roads, up here I see more 4wd vehicles in ditches than 2wd... I use the 4wd to help when I need it (usually the old beast is left in 2wd) to get me going... I don't count on it for additional control (I actually loose some steering ability under accelleration with it in 4wd). Of course, I do take it out into the 'wild' now and then a go nuts with it, but never on the roads. Also, at least on my Jimmy, when in 4wd.. ABS is comprimised (not disabled, but not as effective), so if I where to need abs for some reason, it wouldn't be there when I need it.

yup, that's exactly it - some people put on snow tires, engage 4wd and drive like hero's, not realising that it doesn't help you stop! It's definitely an aid, and definitely useful in climates where the temperatures drop well below zero - because the rubber compound in all season tires usually freezes around 14 degree F - and then it's like trying to drive on hockey pucks :)

SNOW HAPPENS!!! If you ever leave the city limits, A LOT OF SNOW HAPPENS!!.......

Pack a little survival kit, keep it in the car, cause no matter how cautious you are, or how good your tires are, or how sweet a LVC HOTTIE driver you are...SNOW HAPPENS!!!!

Safe trails to yall this winter!

I know about driving on hockey pucks.. doing that right now! The jimmy has a very aggressive tread pattern.. nearly off road only. even when they freeze (they do), it still gets me around... I just drive like an old man (I almost resemble that anyway). The cougar.. well, if a snow flake falls.. its stuck! :D Its tires are definately frozen right now.. (cold, windy, snowy as I type this).. even after my plow guy did my drive, ect. today, I went to move it back into its spot, and almost didn't get there! It actually seems to do better with a little bit of snow on ground... Just keep it away from ICE (same with Jimmy).

Up here where I am at, they use VERY little salt, mostly just spread sand, so when its cold (below about 15F), the roads tend to freeze.... Try going down a hill, covered with 3 inches of ice.... with a little moisture on it (warm day)... I almost put my jimmy in father-in-laws front yard, going all of 1 mph! I started straddling the crown of road, slid off the crown, right over to the side.. snow bank gave me the grip I needed to get it moving again. This is on a DIRT road too... a school route, that get plowed often. I WATCHED a snow plow spin out on it that day too! I lived at bottom of said hill, father-in-law about halfway down it.

depends what you mean by real winter? We get a decent amount of snow in the burbs of Chicago and the temp gets really low. We have a real winter but I also have psychological problems :facesjump :runaway:
