You did the right thing. Many put it like this " We reap as we sow" or "what comes around goes around"

In your case who knows by you doing the right thing, you may have saved that guy his job who knows.. we may never truly know how our actions affects those we are dealing with .

I think the best I've ever heard it said was " When you always tell the truth, you never have to remember what you said"
