Sohc Vs Dohc

Nope, we are blessed with the lighter weight 'cast' crank. Forged cranks usually feature polished journals, knife-edged counter-balancers, and cross drilled/chamfered oilers. All good reasons to get a forged crank no doubt.

However, I have yet to see a cast crank fail. The lighter weight, if properly balanced, will rev alot faster than the forged steel crank. You are talking around 50 lbs for the forged vs 30 lbs for the cast, rough numbers.

For everyones info also,

Jeremi is running a stock cast crank in his twinscrew markVIII. This is also running higher than normal compression. Needless to say that thing is a BEAST. I've had the pleasure of both riding in it, and driving it.

makes me think twice about spending the extra money on a forged crank if I go with a reduced power level for the 95.

I've seen one cast crank fail- but it was in an overly abused Marauder that failed on the track. There are pictues rolling around MM.net somewhere. Of course, he was running a ridiculous tune on pump gas, stock shortblock and heads, and a Trilogy kit. The compression must've been over 18:1 with 92octane!

not making much power on that stock 302 block.

i cant understand how a cracked plastic intake got coolant in a cyl. the plastic coolant runner is seperate from any intake runners and EVERY time ive seen 1 cracked it was along the front between the banks.

powdered metal rods not powdercoated;)

cant tell you how but it happened, but it did. The car started running like crap, bogging, rough idle, etc. After checking it out I had coolant pooled on the manifold, and pulled the spark plugh and coolant came out...

What kind of power is his car making? Just curious, not wanting to argue about cast vs forged cranks (at least not on this motor.)

He's at around 395 to the rear wheels and I believe it is a stock Mach 1 motor he picked up. It is not a Mark VIII motor.

You only need one cam to make power!!

Yes it is true that you only need 1 cam to make power if you have a 302 (my favorite engine) I have seen BONE STOCK bottom ends with aftermarket heads and a completetly built top end with TWO 150 shot nitrous plates being ran. This stang ran weekly at the track for 7 months untill his fuel pump fried and he melted a hole thru his pistion. It ran consistant low 10's.

The 87-92 5.0's had forged pistions and a great bottom end to build on. I beleive the 93's got hyperwhatever pistions.

More than that, it was at 400 with the stock pulley. He's since switched that for a smaller one. He BOUGHT a new mach engine, but had forged pistons and rods installed. Also running slightly massaged terminator heads. Other than that, you'll have to ask him for more details.

Sounds like a guy I know who goes by LuxLx on the internet, he has a Fox with a stock (cast) bottom end Cadillac 500 with ported iron heads, a cam, and a 250 shot. It's in the high 9s.
