On an '02 LS (V6):

I just installed a used, but confirmed good solenoid pack and a question has arisen in my mind.

Does the transmission/PCM have the ability to adapt to swapping out of solenoid packs?

In other words, is the 5r55n an 'adaptive' transmission?

Who all has swapped out solenoid packs and have you experienced any issues related to what I am talking about?

Anyone have a link to any instructions talking about this? I haven't seen aything that speaks to it.

Merry Christmas, thanks a bunch!

Yes, it's adaptive. You really should try searching this site.

um, tried that... after 20 minutes of searching fruitlessly I figured I'd just look like a complete fool and ask the question in hopes of finding someone nice enough to provide an explanation.

Okay, I'll be nice.

You can leave it as it is and it will adapt on its own. How long that takes depends on how you drive and how good the new solenoids are and how bad the old ones were.

You can disconnect the battery for a few minutes and reset it to defaults. It will still take it a while to relearn. How long depends somewhat on how you drive. I can't say if this will be faster than not resetting it to defaults or not.

There are some specific driving steps that you can follow that will speed the process up. I don't recall them offhand, you'll have to search for those.

Also, use Google site search instead of the built-in search. That way you can search for string and for all words instead of just any words.

Thanks Joe - I knew you had it in you. With all due respect Joe, just because I don't have a ton of postings on this forum, doesn't mean I haven't been around the block once or twice somewhere else. I admit, this is my first LS and I only bought it because it was $500; and I'm a Ford guy; and I like the way they look. A missing cylinder head freeze plug, and a 4-5 gear issue are the only major things so far wrong with it at the moment (from what I can gather these cars can be maintenance intensive. Oh, and the rear passenger door won't open from inside or out. Everything relatively minor in my opinion. So far put in a temporary plug and have installed all new valve body springs/cleaned everything and installed new gaskets and a new filter so hopefully will be on my way now after refilling the fluid this weekend. I'll try the google approach from now on. Thanks again...

Wow! That is too much work to put in a used pack!

I'm waiting until I have the funds for a new pack, filter and fluid.

I hope it works out for you!

Well, to some people I guess it might be. Only a couple of hours of work really and I'm trying to keep the $$ spent on this car down to a minimum... Fingers definitely crossed, but I feel like success is on the horizon.

disconnect battery and proper battery reconnect procedure (check manual) and break-in via a drive cycle (search) will hasten the process and provide for a much smoother transition. it doesnt make sense to keep specs for a solenoid (or any other component factoring into a shift timing) that no longer exists. just clear the specs and move on with calibrating current hardware/components
