As the title says..Its on the right rear bumper. Not to bad but i wasnt to happy to see it when i got home. Trying to nail down where it could've happened but i'm not to sure. Ima take some polish to it and see what happens. This 1 week after detailing it.
My rear bumper does have some battle scars from 13 years of use and was going to get it painted once i get a job anyways.

Questions:

I have used the duplicolor spray cans and like them abunch but never did a surface area the size of a bumper. Anybody tackle a job like this and how did it turn out?

ROUGHLY from anyone with experience how much would a typical shop charge to repaint it? prep, primer, flex agent, paint, clear...

I guess i'd be alot more pissed off had the bumper been flawless.

I would just prep it yourself and have it ready for primer and paint. you will save some money that way.

That i can do and was planning on it (depending on the rough estimates i get here) as i'm very anal when it comes to imperfections if having the work done.

Do you put the flex agent above or below the primer? I dont even know if they sell that stuff in a spray can.

i had my front and rear done for 600 but insurance paid for it

Thats not to bad..Though i'd prob do the rear first and then the front as its not as bad. Maybe before i can afford to send it in i'll practice on it.hmmm

my brother used to do bodywork and said that you really don't need flex agents but I think it gets added in the paint.....not sure:confused:

the flex goes in the paint and id defiantly use it the slightest bump or depression in the bumper and it will flake the paint

I don't know about the flex agent but I do know that it is good to use some adhesion promoter to bumper covers. It helps keep them paint from chipping when it does flex! That does come in a spray can!

If your going to be picky about the finish take it somewhere. Especially since that color is a tri-coat, and you will never be able to match the color with an aerosol can. It will be well worth the money. your probably looking around $500-$750.

Last summer, i took my car to a reputable body shop here locally, and got an estimate to paint the hood, and front and rear bumpers. They said that the bumpers will have to be removed and prepped and painted. as well as the hood. the estimate was $1250.00. i about fell over. needless to say, my bumpers havent been repainted yet, lol

sounds like a pretty reasonable price to me. If most people knew the amount of work involved they would probably agree too.

My son does mobile bumper paint for car lots I think the shop he works for gets around 400 bucks takes him about 2 hours they use bumper paint.

I am not sure why all seem to think paint and body is an inexpensive thing. We all want our cars to look awesome and have all the paint to match but will not pay for it. A good body and paint job takes TIME and time is money. If the prep is not good then the paint will not be good to start with.

SB, remember your car is red and red is one of the most expensive colors due to the pigments in the paint and when you lay it on the car it is transparent so a good value shade is required before you do. There is so much to do and so much to know, would you not want to be paid for your abilities and knowledge if you were in the business?

P.S.

Taking the bumbers off the car is the best way to do it but to match it to the car will be tough unless you have them blend it on the car after prep or just shoot the edges let dry and then reinstall to then blend into the car. Still tough to match just be ready for some slight differences.

I would not prep it yourself either a good guy will probably take off what ever you put on certain primers or sealer go with certain paints.

your car is also a tri coat like k98tm said, which is an extra layer of paint. Which translates to more time and more money. You should also put flex in the primer, paint, and clear. Those bumper covers are like playing with a wet noodle. You won't need adhesion promoter unless you break thru to the plastic on the bumper.

All I know is my front bumper on my 93 was repainted before I purchased the car. You can see that they didn't match it the best. All depends on the lighting to notice.

So depending on what you want and can afford, will determine how it gets done. Paint is not cheap ... good painting is even more unless you are luck to be like Jeb who does it for a living ... or have a relative who does it for a living.

In painting my car. On the bumpers I did have spots that I burned through the paint but I used epoxy primer instead of rubber adhesion promoter and I handled those bumpers in all types of ways letting them flex and got no delamination. I did seal them to take care of chipping issues.

They are not too hard to paint. If you had a 30 gallon ( 4 cfm at 40 psi) compressor then you could do it for 20$ for the gun and however much for the paint. I would use pro- spray as it's much cheaper than ppg. Some scuffing, etc and your on your way.

But, like someone previously said it is a lot of information to know. 400$ for a bumper is about right. But you are always paying for experience in painting a car. For comparison I spent 1400$ on painting my car. Half that money was spent on fixing mistakes, but a shop doing a epoxy, primer, flattening, sealer, paint, clear would have run in the 4-5k range. There is a writup with pictures here in the forum of someone doing exactly what your doing with rattlecan with nice results.
