Figured it was time to share a POSITIVE 2000 LS story, since I have done my share of complaining.

Car is a 2000 V8 Sport with 146,000, mostly highway miles

Just changed my 3 and 5 coil. Last year I changed coil 2 and VCG and new plugs.

When we opened it up, realized that all my coils (except #2) were the OEM's from when car was made.

I dont race it, but I cruise at normal 75-80 and open it up when needed. (some idiot trying to act up)

For some OEM crap coils, they have done pretty damn well,,lol

146,00 and going strong.

Now if I could get it to stop overheating we would be in business,,lol

Are you sure it's really overheating and not just the thermastat sticking? Mine gave all the warnings and messages for overheating, but it was just a thermastat replacement. It's a 2000 as well. Just a thought to help out.

That is good news. You rarely hear the good stories becaus emost people come here to get help with a problem or complain about how horrible their car is.

Thanks for sharing.

a sticking thermostat causes the engine to overheat because it does not allow coolant to flow in through block and radiator. The engine has to have a constant supply of low temp coolant to keep it from overheating, and all of the coolant has to flow past the thermostat to get to where it needs to be. So obviously, if the thermostat is stuck closed coolant cant flow past it and the coolant that is in the block gets too hot because there is no fresh coolant flowing in to push it out.

Yea it overheats every week or so,, been thru 3 stat,, and one new bottle cap.

Now I basically open cap very few days, and release the pressure and Im good for a couple weeks.

Been working for couple mnths now.

I believe my issue is a bad Head Gasket,,lol

I reallly dont want to have to fix.. so I am MAGYVERING it up for now.

My problem on mine was a faulty cylinder head temp sensor. Same symptom. Would intermittently overheat (once or twice a week). I changed the thermostat, and was good for a few weeks, then started again. Took it to the dealer, they covered it - even though it wasn't under warranty. IIRC, it wouldn't have beena cheap labor bill compared to the part that needed replacing...

If you had a bad head gasket, i think you'd be able to see the coolant leak...

I would like to add one thing. I bought my LS a few months ago and I went over the whole car fixing little things. When I took off the cover over the radiator and headlights, I found a lot of leaves and junk blocking the front the the radiator. I used a hose to wash it all out of there.
My car was not overheating but I'm sure the cooling system works more efficiently now.

How much was the Sensor?

How big a job is it?

i had the shop at the dealer fix it. the part was under 20 bucks, but they had to remove the intake to get at the sensor. too much surgery for me. IIRC, they wanted 350 or something...

oh, and there are 2 sensors. one of mine was reading 47 degrees different than the other.

I had the same thing with mine. Except there was fur and mouse turds in there too. :p

If its not smoking, and there is no chocolate milk in your oil then its not a head gasket.
You might be surprised what a coolant change could do to help the overheating problem.
