Ok, so last weekend, i replaced both vcgs. car has been smoking a bit and it was starting to worry me since it has been 5 days since the vcg replacement. but im driving home from work this morning, and the sob just dies on me. i was doing about 40 and it just died. for no aparent reason it just died. i pulled over and tried to start it again but it would just click. nothing else. a couple of guys from work saw me as they drove by and stopped i tried jumpin it but nothing. absolutely nothing, it'll just click but it wont even try to crank. its one thing right after another. one after another. its really frustrating. i just replaced the alternator a few weeks ago, did all 8 spark plugs and ignition coils. i was gettin ready to take it in for a cat replacement, one of them seems to be clogged. and now this. so, now my car in on the side of the road, and its a long damn walk, being my only car and all. anyone got any suggestions. what should i do? i cannot figure out what the problem might be. why would the damn ls from hell just die while driving it? DAMMIT!!!
 
Have your alternator checked, sounds like it died and killed the battery also. I know you said you just had it changed but it is possible it went bad from what you said happened.
 
If it wont take a jump the battery may be to low to take the charge from a jump or flat out dead. Take it in to a NTB or somewhere like Autozone and they can charge it and then test it for free. After you can get the car running take it in for a alt. test


I get funny problems from time to time ( never just dies while driving though), I have a feeling somethings is corroded cause my dash tells me the charging system is OK.

Since the battery is in the trunk its going to be a b*tch finding out what wires are damaged I assume.
 
there is another jump point in the wheel well - if you casn jump it form there - then it's likely a wiring issue.

I wonder if the alternator is not electricaly connected somehow - and you've been driving off the battery for a few days... until it's dead.

Another jump point in the wheel well? Never heard of it or seen it. Elaborate please :)
 
sounds like battery or a defective alt. good luck buddy
 
in the passenger side wheel well, against the firewall - there is a positive jump point.

Well it makes sense they would do that, since the battery is in the trunk! And since the trunk release is an electric solenoid, a 100% dead battery would prevent the trunk from opening, putting an owner in quite a pickle. Good information! Thanks Quik!

Opens with a key.
 
The connection between the key of the trunk lock and the trunk lock is mechanical. It works with a dead or no battery. (Verified)
 
I only went by previous posts. I've never had a dead battery. Not 100% dead, anyway.

Then, I guess I have to say... Why put it there if you can access your trunk when the battery is completely dead?
 
yea but still.... its good to know thats there, when you cant park another car behind you to jump start it.... they can still be parked side by side

No room under the hood, help with the near 50/50 weight distribution, and a more stable temperature environment for a longer lasting battery.
 
I was saying why put in the extra jump point in the wheel well if you can reach the battery just fine? Especially since you'd have to get to the battery compartment to grab the jack, to remove the jack to take the wheel off. More work for nothing, know what I mean?
 
It's probably like what 00 said, if the car is parked up against a wall and you can't push it away to get a car behind to jump the car..?

That's good info, though, Quik. I've seen that question asked quite a few times here and nobody's ever known if there was one.

So, my problem would be either the battery or the alternator? is the a chance that it might be the starter or something.
 
Doubt it if it just died while you were driving, starter is only used to start the car. Its not used while the car is running.
 
I had an alternator fail at about 109K miles on my '02LS8. Replaced it, and about 2 months later, I was almost to the starting line at an ECTA event in Maxton, NC, when the car just died. We towed it back to the pits, did some quick checks, and had to go to town to get another alternator. Put it back in by flashlight illumination in the pits that evening. And set four records the next day.

I believe you'll find that you need an alternator, and quite possibly, a battery.

Hope that alternator has a warranty.


That "jump point" behind the splash guard looks like a distribution block to me. A block with several cables bolted to it, which all go to different locations.
 
thats why its a jump start area... sends power to the areas needed to start the car... other wise you would just be turning the starter over... i bet one of those wires is from PCM so it doesn't have to have 3 wires going to the trunk....
