Picked up a clean 03 Aviator a few weeks ago, and wanted to do some basic maintenance on it. It has 63,000 miles and runs well, but gas mileage is horrific...actually worse than the 00 Expedition 5.4litre it replaced. I already changed all 4 O2 sensors, hoping that may have had an effect on mileage, but just did it today, so surely I don't know if it's better, same or worse.

I have spark plugs for it, but I know my 5.4 Expy was a royal PITA to change plugs on...On this one, do I just remove those covers from the valve covers and the plugs are right there, or what?

I also couldn't find the gas filter, lol...Where do they hide that?

Thanks in advance...:)

I attached a pic from first day I bought it. So far only "mod" is new wheel center caps. The stockers were delaminating, so I found some chrome replacements on Ebay and swapped them on. Even though rims are clearcoated silver and aluminum, the chrome is a nice (barely noticeable) addition without being gawdy. I think they blend well with chrome roof rack and door moldings.

Yes on the spark plugs. As for the gas filter, I will have to llok it up in the service manual. I'll get back to you in a few.
