Sen. Joe Biden Commits Racial Slur, Where's the Outrage?

Posted by Noel Sheppard on July 7, 2006 - 10:32.

As NewsBuster Mark Finkelstein pointed out on Friday, there is quite a double-standard in the media concerning what’s acceptable for a Democrat to say versus a Republican. With that in mind, as captured by C-SPAN, Senator Joe Biden (D-Delaware) recently made some comments concerning folks from India that were not at all flattering. As of yet, there appears to be no media outrage.

Here’s what Biden said:

“In Delaware, the largest growth of population is Indian Americans, moving from India. You cannot go to a 7/11 or a Dunkin’ Donuts unless you have a slight Indian accent. I’m not joking.”

Our friend Ian at Expose the Left has the video so that you can watch for yourself to gauge the seriousness of these statements, and what might have happened if a Republican had said the same thing.

Wonder if he'll be treated like Trent Lott was. Or Fuzzy Zoeller! (NOT!)

He is a Democrat. And Democrats cant be racist, silly boy. I thought you knew that already.

He's stereotyping and at the same time sticking his foot right in his mouth while making a total ass of himself. But, you're right, if it had been a Republican, the media would have covered it as a full out anti-Indian racist remark.

Comparing what Biden said and what Lott said is apples and oranges:

"I want to say this about my state: When Strom Thurmond ran for president, we voted for him. We're proud of it. And if the rest of the country had followed our lead, we wouldn't have had all these problems over all these years, either," Lott said at last week's party.

Thurmond ran as the presidential nominee of the breakaway Dixiecrat Party in the 1948 presidential race against Democrat Harry Truman and Republican Thomas Dewey. He carried Alabama, Louisiana, Mississippi and his home state of South Carolina, of which he was governor at the time.

During the campaign, he said, "All the laws of Washington and all the bayonets of the Army cannot force the Negro into our homes, our schools, our churches."

Thurmond's party ran under a platform that declared in part, "We stand for the segregation of the races and the racial integrity of each race."

As usual, the RWW, hate driven drivel makes up crap that is not true in a weak attempt to vilify a dem. Biden made NO "racial slur", all he did was stereotype Indians. Lott on the other hand stated that he supports segregation and blamed "today's problems" on the lack of keeping races segregated. That IS racist.

Lol, that is a entirely different animal. Thanks for the input.

You just put words in Lott's mouth. You want to cite your source for that dubious quotation?

Talk about making up crap. You win the boobie prize.

That was outrageous. Lott said no such thing.

At a celebration for a 100 hundred year old man, Lott made some superficial comment intended to get an applause and make an old man happy.

Using Johnny's logic, next time someone says something nice about Democrat patriarch Robert Byrd, I think the media should attack them for endorsing the grand wizard of the KKK.

I found this; apparently Lott did make that statement and he did apologize for his comment coming off as an approval of Thurmond's segregation policies.

"A poor choice of words conveyed to some the impression that I embraced the discarded policies of the past," Lott said. "Nothing could be further from the truth, and I apologize to anyone who was offended by my statement.

Trent Lott

In response to this:

"I want to say this about my state: When Strom Thurmond ran for president, we voted for him. We're proud of it. And if the rest of the country had followed our lead, we wouldn't have had all these problems over all these years, either,"

Trent Lott

I can see were it could be concluded that Lott is pro segregation/racist when he says "...we voted for him. We're proud of it." But he did apologize...

Trent Lott is from Mississippi. Mississippi support Thurmond when he ran for President.
And if the rest of the country had followed our lead, we wouldn't have had all these problems over all these years, either,"
I think Lott ran for President againstr Truman in 1948.

Keeping in mind Lott made this comment in 2002, refering to a century old mad who no longer endorsed segregation or racist policies. Not endorsing the failed and evil policies of discrimination and segregation Thurmond endorsed about 60 years earlier.

Again- if this standard is to be uniformly applied, I must have missed the democrat party abandoning Robert "K.K.K" Byrd.

Lott wasn't making an argument, he wasn't making a point, in essence he was making a toast to an old guy who was about to die.

I can see were it could be concluded that Lott is pro segregation/racist when he says "...we voted for him. We're proud of it." But he did apologize...
If you remove context, and you have a desire to smear the Republican majority leader of the Senate for political reasons, I'd agree. But who can not relate to saying nice general things to old people?

Agreed, but I'm just saying where one COULD see his remarks as being supportive of racist ideals, even ones from 60+ years ago. Lott apologized for that reason and acknowledged that his wording could have been better.

As opposed to the RACIST Biden, who did NOT apologize, but instead defended his nasty remarks...

I wouldn't necessarily jump to the conclusion that Binden is a racist solely based on that one comment. Sure it was insensitive and he made an ass of himself but a racist?

The issue isn't whether Biden is a racist. What's bothersome is the double standard being used by the media when covering these events. As you're aware, how loud would the outcry be if Sen. Frist made the same comment?

Not an issue with you....

But yes,(my opinion)if Biden had been a Republican the media would have most likely rolled out the 'Racist' carpet. But I guess we'll never know for certain.

You've got to be kidding. Don't be a hypocrite. You obviously read Johnny's assertion (with much less obvious a statement to go on) about Lott being a RACIST. Where's your rebuttal of Johnny's comment? What Biden said was so much more clearly a racist remark that it's laughable.

Where's the intellectual honesty with liberals? :shifty:

I'm not sure what Lott ultimately meant by his comments, I only mentioned that it could have been taken as a 'racist' comment. Lott acknowledged this, apologized and said it was a poor choice of wording. I'll take his word for it. (See post #10)

What Binden said wasn't racist, it was stereotypical and asinine to say, but not racist in my eyes. I did not see any hate in his comments, just ignorance.

So in essence, I am disagreeing with Johnny that Lott is a racist and I am disagreeing with you that Binden is a racist.

If you consider me a liberal, there's the intellectual honesty you seek.

Lott clearly stated that he was proud of supporting a canditate that ran on a segregationist platform and added that many of today's problems are the result in the rest of the country not following the lead of segregationism, which is clearly RACIST statement. That may not be what he meant to say, or how he truly feels today, but that IS what he SAID. For anyone to deny those facts thrust in thier face is to paint themselves IGNORANT.

Biden on the other hand only made the faux-pas of stereotyping Indians, the only comment he made was that they are the fastest growing minority in the US, NOT that they are better or worse than any other race.

Intellectualy honesty? From you? LOL

Why don't you show the EXACT QUOTE Where Lott said "that many of today's problems are the result in the rest of the country not following the lead of segregationism"?

What's the big deal about supporting a segregationist? Al Gore's FATHER was a segregationist. Did you vote for him? If you did, you're a RACIST!!!

You are exhibiting McCarthyism at a level not even attained by McCarthy.

There nearly sixty years had passed since Thurmon ran on a segregationalist platform. In case you didn't also know, he was also a DEMOCRAT during that period. Do you also think that Lott was saying that he privately, secretly supported the election of Democrat to the Presidency too?

Of course not. Are all the people who relected that hundred year old fossil to office through the 60s, 70s, 80s, 90s, and into the 21st century all infavor of segregation? Obviously not.

And do those of you who rally around Robert Byrd also endorse his history as a Grand Dragon of the KKK? Of course not.

The entire Lott attack was a calculated assault on the GOP leadership. And it was dishonest, and it relied on a biased media to perpetuate the story.

That may not be what he meant to say, or how he truly feels today, but that IS what he SAID. For anyone to deny those facts thrust in thier face is to paint themselves IGNORANT.
No, it's called, "Being nice to old people with one foot in the grave." Also, see the above comment for further explanation.

Biden on the other hand only made the faux-pas of stereotyping Indians, the only comment he made was that they are the fastest growing minority in the US, NOT that they are better or worse than any other race.
This is the hypocracy. I don't think that making a joke about an ethnic group necessarily makes you a "racist." I don't have any reason to think that Biden is a racist, but his comment doesn't require you to refrence political history from the 1940s.

But the comment he made, perpetuating a stereotype of all Indians working in convience stores, was deemed offensive by many Indians. Apparently, he disregarded the huge number of Indian doctors, engineers, and professions.

The chairman of the Indian American Republican Council issued a statement resonding to Biden's comment, " It’s amazing to know we don’t all work at Dunkin Donuts or the local 7/11. The contributions to America by Indian Americans in the fields of medicine, education, science, and business have been well-documented."

Biden's statement is very clear. I don't have to explain to you what it means. You can't create multiple explanations for it. It was very clear.

But what if he said, that the Chinese population was booming because you can't find a laundry matt without a Chinese person working there, or that the black population was increasing because the welfare offices are full. Would these be considered racist?

I would disagree. You're so blinded by partisan hate, you've lost any and all objectivity.

And do you honestly think you would be defending a Republican had they made a similar comment? You're engaging in mental contortions to defend Biden, and you've had to really struggle to indict Lott. Yet, I'm sure you supported Lott losing his seat of power, but you think Biden should be excused. Sounds intellectually dishonest to me.

Man, you made sooo many good points in that post I owuldn't know where to start to improve upon it. Just a great post and a pleasure to read. Thanks for partipating. You 'keep things real' very well.

I HAVE to echo Bryan on that one.

Good job, Calabrio.

When you guys get done jerking each other off, answer me this:

If Lott's statement didn't sound "racist", then WHY did Lott himself acknowledge that it sounded "racist" by offering this apology?

"A poor choice of words conveyed to some the impression that I embraced the discarded policies of the past," Lott said. "Nothing could be further from the truth, and I apologize to anyone who was offended by my statement."

Talk about "engaging in mental contortions", you guys are a joke.
