If they would drop the speed limit back to 55 MPH the price of gas would drop. Supply and demand. You may not like it but it worked in 1978 and it would work again.Most states still have all there 55 mph signs .
In 1978 they were fulling tanks in empty gas stations because they had no where to go with it.

Take and test your self . Drive your car at 55 mph for 1 week and see the difference it makes. Now you take the whole country and do it the gas prices will drop.
Sure theres gonna be people that are not gonna drive 55 and they will pay more in fines.
I know I drove my car at 55 on freeways and got 29.7 MPG My son has a Mazda that don't do that good. I have written my elected officials and purpose a 55 mph Limit .And so should you.

I just got back from a road trip to / from California and running through AZ I got a respectable 29.4 MPG at 75 MPH?

Living in Texas which is 90+ Miles from one end to the other it would be a hard sell proposing a 55 MPH Speed Limit. West Texas on the 10 the speed limit is 80 MPH!
 
I couldn't care less about gas prices, therefore i will NOT be writing to any officials. 55 is so slow! :p
 
Try putting that 0W-20 Mobil 1 in your car. I bet it will save you another 1 mpg :cool:

I know its a long way across 870 miles but we drove it for years at 55 mph
29.4 at 55 you might have got 35 MPG.
 
Hel_ when I was 28 I couldn't care less.

Aside from the age thing, its also because i recently moved here from England where gas is double the price. I've never had it so good! :)
 
55? That means I would be breaking the speed limit when I hit second and would be going to jail by the time I hit third. God save me when I hit fourth.
 
Opposition and noncompliance

The 55 mph limit was wildly unpopular. To wit:

* From April through June 1982, speed was monitored on New York's Interstate highways, and an 83% noncompliance rate was found despite extreme penalties ranging from $100 (1982 dollars) or 30 days jail on a first offense to $500 (1982 dollars), up to 180 days in jail, and a six month driver's license revocation upon third conviction in 18 months. [6]
* Arizona, Idaho, Montana, Nevada and Utah replaced traditional speeding fines with $5-$15 energy wasting fines as long as drivers did not exceed the speed limit in effect before the 55 mph federal requirement.[7] Nevada's energy wasting fine was enacted on April 15, 1981 when signed by Governor Robert List. Motorists not exceeding 70 mph in 55 mph zones could be issued $5 "energy wasting" fines. However, standard speeding tickets were still allowed and "troopers were directed not to take the new law as a signal to stop writing tickets."[8]
* In 1981, 33 state legislatures debated measures to oppose the 55 mph speed limit.[9]
* Even organizations supporting the 55 mph limit, like the American Automobile Association, provided lists of locations where the limit was strictly enforced.[10]
* On June 1, 1986, Nevada ignored the 55 mph speed limit by posting a 70 mph (110 km/h) limit on a 3 mile (5 km) stretch of Interstate 80. The Nevada statute authorizing this speed limit included language that invalidated itself if the federal government suspended transportation funding. Indeed, the Federal Highway Administration immediately withheld highway funding, so the statute quickly invalidated itself.[11]
 
speed limit here in chi-town is 55....doesnt make a bit of differece. nobody drives 55 everybodys doin 65-70+

Maybe 15W40 would work better than the 55 speed limit. And 55 is NOT the most efficient speed for today's 4, 5 and 6 speed auto transmissions.

So you go ahead and drive 55. Just stay the hell out of the left lane.:cool:
 
the cars that were built when the 55 mph was in effect were also the worst for depenability,performance and I.M.O. were the american cars dark ages. (just look how many hav'nt survived!)
 
55 lmao?????????? 55 is the speed limit on secondary roads around here in florida, most of the interstates are 75, and if you try going 55 here you'll be pushed off the road. cross alligator alley down at the bottom of the state, coming back from miami i had my cruise set at 90 with the seat reclined and a leg out of the window and semi's were passing me, i think the average speed on alligator alley is around 100, and god forbid a herd of street bikes go by, you'll hear them for about a half a second, but never see them!!!!!
i'm sorry but in this day and age, 55 mph starts road rage, which leads to a fight, crashing, or getting killed.

All highway roads with in 30 miles of Pittsburgh are 55. I'm use to it. I set cruse at 60.

I can remember back in the 70's when the fine was $15.00 no madder how fast you were driving and No points.:)

I just started this Tread to see where it would go.:) Hammer down. I'll keep to the left. Hell I'm retired and not in a hurry anyway.
 
I know my car will get excellent gas mileage at 55MPH with AC on running on cruise control. (29-30MPG)

But.. does the MPG offset the additional time spent on the road?

I dont know.

To me there is more than merly MILES per Gallon.. what about "hours spend on the dangerous roads?

the more time you spend on the hiway, the more chance you give someone to kill you.

the difference between 55MPH and 65MPH is 10 miles further down the road at the end of an hour.

10 miles at 65 MPH you will be 10 miles and over 10 mniutes ahead of the 55 MPH driver.

On a long road trip this time will add up rapidly...and the 55MPH driver spends MORE TIME on the road, his engine is running longer as well.

Less run time, less danger by being on the road for a shorter amount of time.

I usually drive within 5MPH (+or-) the posted speedlimit, and I am often "passed" more than I "pass", unless I'm at the dragstrip

ALSO if driving 10MPH faster will get me to my destination before nightfall, then it makes more sense and is safer to drive that 10MPH faster.

IMHO of course.
