Squeaky Steering wheel (auto-tilt)

My steering column is making alot of squeaky noise when I put the key in or out of the ignition (auto tilt). What can I do to take this noise out?!?!

Mine has a squeek when im turning, its a very low sounding squeek too. What should i do??? :Bang :eek2:

Try treating the rubber piece that is on top of the steering column.

mine is squeking but its from the outside, i was told its the ball joint and it needs to b greased he told be to spray some wd 40 in a seringe and stick it in the rubber grease cap.???????/

Mine had a squeaky/chatter noise when the wheel was traveling in and out.

What I did was take the panel out that is over the pedals and put a little vaseline on the 2 shafts that rotate/move on the steering column. These 2 shafts control the tilt/telescope feature. Cleared my noises right up!

WD-40 is not what you want to use for any long-term lubricant. I wouldn't do anything to those ball joints unless it is a last effort before replacing them. You could break down the grease that is there and make it worse.

If you have bad ball joints (something to triple check), replace them. If there is play, there is always the chance of that stud breaking, which has happened before. It's an easy job to do in your garage. I have the pics, I just haven't thrown together a page yet. The only real bad thing is that the parts are expensive.

The only lube that should be used in those things is a very durable synthetic grease. WD40 would strip that down.

Maybe it is noise from an outside contact near the ball joint. You could use some 3 in 1 (blue can) oil on parts to see if it helps. I just wouldn't penetrate any seals.
