I bought a Mark VIII about 2 years ago. Ever since then the Mark VII I own has been slowly moving away from use. The car itself has been sitting for about a year.

I decided to try and get it running today so I replaced the battery, aired the tires back up, let the air ride fill again and tried to start it. She cranked easily and started up. The problem is as soon as I released the key from start back to the defaulted ON position it died instantly.

Whats going on here? I also noticed the windows/sunroof will not move in the on or acc position. I checked all the fuses under the steering wheel (after trying to remember where the hell they were) and they were all solid. I tried looking for that fuel switch in the trunk and was unable to find it (was getting pretty dark) unless its actually behind the panel instead of on it.

Where should I start looking to getting this thing running again?

Sitting in the car, trying to get it to run has caused me to not want to sell it again, but it would be nice to see it run.

Air, Fuel, Spark

Welcome from overcast Philadelphia, PA.

Our Mark VIIs need air, fuel, and spark to run. After sitting for awhile, you need to check a coupe of things.

Air - There could be a family of critters comfortably inhabiting your air filter or the air silencer bottle.

Fuel - Drain it and replace the fuel filter. The stuff you have in there has broken down and needs to be replaced.

Spark - If your Mark is an 84 - 89, then click the link in my signature about the ignition switch (not key cylinder). I would make this JOB 1.

As you take care of these things, come back to this thread and let us know what's going on.

Yea I was going to remove the fuel but in a impatient attempt I tried to start it and it actually got ignition and I was amazed.

I will drain the fuel on my next day off and look at #3 as well, thank you. Whats wrong with the factory ignition switches?

Read read read the article.

I read the article, it was instructions on how to repair it, but that image was not in the article.

Searched the term: ignition switch and didnt see any stickies. Sorry.

I will take your advice and check all the norms. I was just really hoping from somone elses experience I would get a place to look that happens on average. Like the blend door ac problem on the mark viii's

Ford ignition switches installed in Lincoln Mark VIIs from 1983 to early 1989, cannot be repaired. The article mentioned above shows details on replacing the switch.

The place to look that happens on average, for the answer to the problem that you mentioned on a Lincoln Mark VII, is the ignition switch.
