Hey Guys,
I want to begin by saying, this is the best board around. I have visited this board many times and have usually been able to figure out what is going wrong just by searching the boards. Unfortunately, I can't figure this one out.
My 2000 LS, 3.9 V8 on occasion will start, then die. Example, I got in my car yesterday and started it up, It died instantly, started it again, died again. I started it a third time and held my foot on the gas, it would go right up to the rev limiter, and I could hold it at about any RPM I wanted and everything was fine. As soon as I would let off the gas, the car would die again.
I did get it across the parking lot, but even while rolling, the car would die if I let off the gas pedal.
I let it sit for a few min, started it, held it at about 1500RPM, turned everything off, took my foot off the gas, and it Idled fine. Drove it home no problem. THis morning, I drove to my office, and everything seemed fine except, my headlights came on while sitting at a stoplight and the car wanted to die again. I am thinking this is an alternator issue but want some advise before I dig that SOB out. Any thoughts???

THanks again to all of you who contribute, what a great resource this is!!!

Sounds like the fuel pump(s) are bad or the fuel filter is clogged up. Does the check engine light (CEL) come on after you get it going?

RE; Starts, Then Dies...

It doesn't throw any codes, no lights or messages except the battry light would come on once the RPMs started to get lower than say 500.

This has me pretty puzzled. I may try a new fuel filter, it has prob been 30 or 40k since I changed it. I wonder about the fuel pump since I can rev the motor as much as I like, and it runs normal. Just wouldn't idle. This has me confused!!!

I had this exact problem on a Grand Marquis. It was the idle air bypass valve getting stuck. Next time it does it, hit the valve with a wrench or something similar, and it will probably start working. You can probably clean it and it will go back to working for at least a while. Or you can replace it at about $60. The new ones are redesigned so that they can't stick in the closed position.
