i have a OBDLink SX and ScanXL Pro from Scantools.net.

the software has a "terminal" for entering OBD instructions/requests/whatever and it's my understanding that there's simply a long string of characters required to initiate these self-tests.

a handheld scanner may come with this built into a handy one click function. but the software i have does not.

my question is does anyone know where to find this string of characters? or where/how to get the cheapest factory service manual so i can see if it's in there?

Does anyone have a factory service manual and wanna take a look? I have alldata reference center but i cant find this info in there.

Yeah, the string code should've come with the software to allow it to communicate with vehicles. Most OBD II codes are all universal with every manufacturer. Some have a few more, or less, depending on what the vehicle has for ecu commands for different module commands. but all the basic codes are the same.

Actually, there are way more manufacturer specific codes than generic codes.

im not exactly sure what you guys are talking about. im not talking about trouble codes. im talking about an OBD command that instructs the computer to run a series of test (that may then throw a trouble code). These codes would not otherwise show up without using the special functionality of a scan tool to run these tests.

my scan tool / software communicate of course with the vehicle. I can read stored, pending adn permanent DTCs (diagnostic trouble codes) including manufacturer specific codes.

the handheld scan tools that you can use at the local auto parts store come with this functionality built it. the software i have does everything under the sun (and for way cheaper) except natively support running these tests.

I know what you are asking, I'd like to know it too. But short of someone monitoring what is sent by the factory issued scan devices (hacking the factory tool), I think you are out of luck.

Sorry. You didn't indicate a date, so I assumed "now."

Oh ya, sorry, I'm not even really understanding what the question was, kinda sounds like some cheap OBD software
