I just Picked up a Remote for a 2000 Ford Taurus for free to use with my 98 LSC and wonder if it should work which I think it should but I replaced the battery with a new one and then programmed it and nothing (door locks doesn't go down and up to confirm completion)...If this remote a should work then I guess it's broken...thanks for any help guys, I wanna look pimpin with the use of my puddle lamps:D

gen 2 marks need the remotes with the memory switch on the back. think the only other one that will work is some year conti

Im looking to buy one off ebay. Is there anything to be aware of, different style? Or pretty much if its says 98 mark viii Im good to go...?

The Mercury remotes that are shaped like the 97-98 Mark remotes also work and you dont need the memory switch on it. My spare remote is from a Sable and looks identical to the Lincoln remote but no memory switch and it works fine. If you open it up you will see it has the contacts for the memory switch and I soldiered a wire across the contacts so it acts as memory #2.

I had a Sable remote before that I soldierd a pice of wire between the contacts to allow it to function as a memory remote. Unfortunatly my father lost it and I had to buy another one. I still need to do it to this one.
You just program the remotes in the order you want them to be. For memory 1 you program that remote first, the second programed remote will be memory #2.

To allow the remote to use the memory function (should you get a Mercury one) just soldier a wire on the two contacts that I circled in red.

holy crap ive never seen a merc dog bone, i thought you were talking about the square remote, good find laserSVT!!!

Either one works on a 98 mark 8? Or just up to a 97?

ok apparently we not understanding each other... i know about your merc fob, but as far as the square ones go it needs to be a gray one like the link you posted with a switch on the back as far as ford says (work in dealer, has big sheet listing what remotes will work for what)

My bad, I was not aware there was differences and I thought the one I posted was not a memory remote eaither. There was another ad on ebay for one like it for $39 that said would work on the 97-98 Mark VIII and didnt have the memory function. Also a couple months back I sold my CD changer to a dude with a 98 Mark and when he pulled his remote out I saw it was square (it was night so not sure if was gray or black) and I asked him what it was from. He said it was eaither a 98 or 99 Mustang but couldnt remember which year for sure.
Its the code hoping that needs to be compatable and that changed every couple years. The memory function has nothing to do with the frequency transmition of the remote.
Now you really have me curious, does your manual rule out a remote because it lacks the memory function? Does it say something like "Will work but lacks memory" or is it just a yes/no kinda thing?

its just a yes no list so maybe. and yes they change the freq every so often i got a couple "tester" remotes at work time to play.

Definatly! Try a few and let us know so we have a definate rather then "It may work" The links of all the remotes I posted WILL work for his car though. If one from a 98 Mustang does in fact work or from a Taurus then that means they can be bought For $15 shipped off ebay. :D

LOL Nice. Keep us posted on what remotes work please.

I just found a remote in the junkyard from a Cash For Clunker'd 2001 Mercury Grand Marquis....
Stuck it in my pocket and figured I'd try it and see if it worked. Got home, programmed it to my 97, and it works great! yay! It's a gray square remote without the memory on/off switch. The model number on the back ends in 313 instead of 311 like the factory ones I have.
Hope that helps someone.

I just bought one from Max.

It's square, grey, brand new, has the memory switch, and works great.

$44.16 plus shipping.

Thanks again Max!:D
