Swine Influenza (Flu)

Swine Influenza (swine flu) is a respiratory disease of pigs caused by type A influenza that regularly cause outbreaks of influenza among pigs. Swine flu viruses do not normally infect humans, however, human infections with swine flu do occur, and cases of human-to-human spread of swine flu viruses has been documented.

From December 2005 through February 2009, a total of 12 human infections with swine influenza were reported from 10 states in the United States. Since March 2009, a number of confirmed human cases of a new strain of swine influenza A (H1N1) virus infection in the U.S. and internationally have been identified. An investigation into these cases is ongoing.

Swine Flu Could Become More Dangerous

The swine flu virus that has killed more than 80 people in Mexico may mutate into a "more dangerous" strain, the World Health Organisation has warned. Skip related content

"It's quite possible for this virus to evolve... when viruses evolve, clearly they can become more dangerous to people," said Keiji Fukuda, of the global health watchdog.

Mr Fukuda also called for international vigilance as health experts wait to see whether the virus will turn into a worldwide pandemic.

Over 1,300 people are now thought to have contracted the virulent H1N1 swine influenza after it mutated into a form that spreads from human to human.

The Mayor of New York has confirmed that eight school children are suffering mild symptoms after becoming infected.

There have been at least 12 other confirmed cases in Texas, Ohio, California and Kansas.

The White House has declared a public health emergency but told the public "not to panic".

Sky US correspondent Greg Milam said: "It's important to realise that those affected have only had mild symptoms, and all have recovered or are recovering.

"But the authorities do believe that this outbreak will get worse."

Elsewhere around the world, suspected cases have been reported in France, Spain, Israel, New Zealand and the UK.

In France, two people who had returned from Mexico with fevers are being monitored in regions near the port cities of Bordeaux and Marseille.

A 26-year-old Israeli man has also been admitted to hospital after returning from a trip to Mexico with flu-like symptoms.

In New Zealand, a group of school children have tested positive for influenza after returning from Mexico.

In the UK, two people have been admitted to a hospital in Scotland after returning from Mexico on April 21.

They are said to have mild flu-like symptoms but their condition is not causing concern.

Mexican City Mayor Marcelo Ebrard said two more people have died of the virus, taking the death toll to 83.

All schools have been shut in Mexico City, the surrounding area and the central state of San Luis Potosi until May 6.

The WHO says it has a stockpile of the antiviral Tamiflu, which has proven effective against the virus, and is preparing a vaccine if needed.

The H1N1 strain of swine flu is usually only seen in pigs - but in humans can cause symptoms including fever and fatigue.

There is "zero evidence" that people are getting infected with the virus from exposure to pigmeat or pigs, the WHO said.

Both.

Declaring a state of emergency for 8 people getting sick? Geez. Remember bird flu and that Chinese respiratory thing? Nada.

American government wants us to be afraid...it's how it always has been. News gets better ratings with bad news and bad news is meant to bring people to fear and hense causing panic and not to mention increase the amount of products sold to prepair for issues. Docs will get their quota this year :p

State of Fear

more like international warning. with global travel more prevalent, diseases don't stay at home anymore. tough picking off which one will be the next pandemic.
someone catches the disease, goes through a crowded airport, gets on a closed in plane, then goes through another crowded airport, possibly infecting thousands before being aware of being sick.
sars was one that was deadly but not easily spread. a flu is easily spread in comparison. probably not much WILL come of it.
but the fact it is showing up in other countries shows how easy it is to start a worldwide problem nowadays.

just after something like aids it's been found it's better to follow and stay on top of things before it gets further along before it's noticed.
be real problem if you wait until thousands are dying before mentioning it. then everyone whines that they should have been informed.

Wait, no wild conspiracy theories connecting this to some plot to subject the American people to socialism?

Wow, I'm disappointed in you guys. I honestly don't know what to say.

State of Fear

I agree with you here. 80 people have died from this Flu, should I sh!t myself now?

Be smart to invest in pharmaceutical stocks, ie Gilead Sciences and Roche, the ones that hold the patent and marketing rights to a supposed vaccine.

YUP---but

Wait, no wild conspiracy theories connecting this to some plot to subject the American people to socialism?

that hasn't stopped you up 'til now!

You're not smart enough to pull of condescending....
Did you know the the federal government is moving to be the majority shareholder of GM?

Or is that just a conspiracy theory?
Don't be a moron and try to stay on subject.

Outbreak of swine flu forces the government to take drastic action.
By U. R. Fuldeasi, AP White House Correspondent – Thu Apr 27, 9:50 pm ET

Today, with the disheartening news that GM will be discontinuing the legendary Pontiac name, and the rising fear of a new pandemic racing across America, Barack Obama has taken unprecedented steps and with a new executive order will change the face of America.

"America will now become the majority stockholder in the largest automotive manufacturer in the world. And with that manufacturing might at our beck and call we will moving the Pontiac lines over to creating a new line of clothing that will be treated with special antibiotics to repel the virus that has been linked to the swine flu." So reads the first line in the ground breaking executive order that the White House released just minutes ago.

"I am placing Michele in charge of creating a new 'style' that will project 'American Might' with trendy GAP overtones." Said President Obama when questioned by reporters on who would lead the design group within this pioneering endeavor.

The Republicans were quick to refute this bold move. "How many middle Americans, who go to tea party protests, look good in GAP capris?" asked Mitt Romney (R-Gov. Massachusetts). And the leader of the Republican Party, Rush Limbaugh was quick to go 'on air' with a fiery dissertation on the amount of time it will take to retrain the line workers. "From installing an engine, to sewing buttons, another irresponsible government program that will waste taxpayer dollars, and further socialism beyond health care and social programs and start to destroy the foundations of American enterprise...

Sorry, I couldn't resist - Cal, what does the federal government investing enough money in GM to become the majority stockholder and the swine flu have to do with each other? And I know this is even more silly - I often wander all about, I shouldn't really say anything... So carry on!

Obama was out golfing, folks. He's not worried about this.

Imagine if Bush were out golfing during a national emergency.

Oh, wait...

Wow, and now we're resorting to personal attacks. Well done, Cal. Have I ever insulted you?

You were being condescending toward (presumably) him and others. If you were being facetious, a simply of some sort would help to convey that. IF it was not directed at him, then it might help to explain who the "others" are when you say "I'm disappointed in you guys".

8 people?

I could have swore it was more than that.

Its not the point regardless, its what they have found out about the flu this far that is the scary part.

It has potential to be more dangerous than the Spanish Influenza. It targets those that are actually young and healthy with working immune systems making those immune systems work in over ride causing death.

Im not all that concerned myself but I wouldn't just say its a tool for spreading fear.

What's a simply? :) You are correct, a smiley would have worked nicely, I don't use them too often. I tend to forget that sarcasm doesn't translate well on the Interweb, lol.

Don't be a moron is good advice.
And sarcastic or not, you were being condescending.

Following the news lately? Hear about Chrysler and GM?
All that talk about nationalizing industry, socialism, marxism, progressivism, fascism, whichever big-government "ism" you like that's contrary to Americanism, is just conspiracy or paranoia, right?

And, frankly, if you're not a little worried that the current administration, or the fillibuster proof Democrat congress, aren't going to seize upon this "crisis" to expand the power of Washington and their power, you're incredibly foolish.

Obama isn't being opportunistic. This is part of his plan to nationalize industry.

Patient 'Zero'.

Apparently they tracked down the cause of all this wide spread panic:D

Some little kid was the cause of the disease spreading but some are blaming a US owned farm for contamination from pig waste in the area to be the origin.

I don't buy it.
That story stinks worse than the pig farm.

Health officials deny the town is the source, but residents disagree and blame a US-owned breeding farm because of contamination from pig waste.

But Governor Fidel Herrera said "there is not a single indicator" suggesting it started in La Gloria.

Well I wont comment on the initial carrier being that boy but I dont buy the US owned farm being at fault for the mutation and origin of the flu. The story does have contradictions.

Its my understanding the flu existed, but like some diseases it just mutated as it was able to carry from pig to bird to eventually human.

It's a mutation/sub-type of the Spanish Flu, which decimated(and then some) back in the day.
