Syriana: More Kool-Aid Propaganda

I agree Bryan. A new government could be a new start. Hopefully Bush could extend the olive branch by returning the $5 Billion that was illegally imposed as duties on our softwood exports. It would be a great start...

Or we could use the money towards the missle defense shield that will protect you but the Liberal government refused to contribute towards. :D
Here's what one of your own commentators, from the CTV, had to say about that:

Oliver said American taxpayers have essentially subsidized Canada which has for years been spending far less on defence than a country of our size should be.
"We're getting away with that because the Americans give us a nuclear umbrella and then a military umbrella in other ways."

The duties were collected under an anti-dumping law authored by Sen. Robert Byrd, a West Virginia Democrat. It is referred to the Byrd amendment. That means they were legal under US law, which the WTO (source of the claim of illegality) doesn't have the authority to overturn. I concur they were ill-advised.

They were overturned in Nov. 2005. The source was under NAFTA, which the US helped write. All we asked was that the US honor NAFTA, and under NAFTA that type of taxation was illegal....

As far as the missile shield, we are already protected under various treaties with the US. There was a time when we wanted our own nuclear missiles, which would have meant that we would require significantly less protection from the US, but you guys didn't want us to. Instead you put some of your missiles here which remained until the mid-80's. And the testing of the shield for the most part has been unsuccessful. I guess we will see what Harper wants to do.

The WTO is who said it was illegal under NAFTA. A mere technicality, as I don't really disagree with you. I'm not a fan of Robert Byrd, nor am I a fan of protectionism, having seen the damage it's done to the European economies.

Rumor here has it Harper may revisit the decision. I hope he also strengthens Canada's military.
