I know a Thunderbird question on a lincoln thread. I was planning on adding a member to my driveway, want to know the stats on a 87/88 thunderbird with a 5.0. I like the style, like the motor, and just want to know the quarter mile on a stock bird, weight, etc. the t-bird is similar to the vll but i think its a little lighter. I like the fact its a 5.0 and its the age it is. Lots of abundent mods and the car itself has low blue book so be cheap. Thanks...

The 87/88 isn't a 5.0 H.O. so your looking at I believe 150h.p. not the 225h.p. the VII has. It is easy to mod, its a fox platform. If I had to guess probably 0-60 8.5 to low 9 secs. 1/4 mile 16.5 to 17.0. I had a 86.
The motor is a big deal thou, its not the tougher block,no roller cam, no shorty headers, etc.

I don't know the information you are looking for, but nice car....I wouldn't mind having one. I might even trade my Mark.

i thought they were ho still fine with me
Nope, just a normal 5.0., just like a town car, crown vic, etc. 88 was the last V-8 thunder bird/cougar till 91. 91-93 were 5.0 H.O.s
They are nice cars, have had alot in the family over the years and still have some. Done lots of things to them.

I like the style of the 87/88 they look fasts just sitting there. Id luv to have one all black cowl hood jacked in the back with some nice chrome tips out the back. Even though there not H.O. I here lots of good things about the performance mods and what not, prob get in high 13 with some good mods N/A, and maybe a shot to get a little faster, lol . Thanks for the info...

My automotive teacher worked for holley back in the 80's and they put a supercharged 5.0 or 3.8(not sure which one) in one of those it was black, and it had black mesh wheels similar to the mark VII with a polished lip. Looks really cool. I think it made over 300 hp. Not real sure on that either.

lol, its all good. The bird would scoot with either supercharged.

Either is capable. I have a 84' up north in a barn. Its from cali. with 30some thousand original miles. Motor, trans, and all under hood electrical is striped. Interior is ugly puffy cloth red and faded. But the car is super super clean. One of my future projects. The car is so easily modded and tons of stuff available, who knows how I'll build her but it will be sweet.

I think you can shoe horn a 460 in to it. seen it done long long ago.
There goes the handling, fuel economy(got to get better than 5mpg these days),and you can prabably get better driveability from something fuel injected and modern. I do have a 351C laying around, I always thought fuel injecting that would be a good mix of old and new. Still heavy though thats the thing, you got to have a plan. So many good ways to do it.

Another good option, probably will go alittle bigger than that. Nothing against the set-up, but just more crazy.
Opt.1; 351C With a spyder type fuel injected set-up on a torker intake.N/A.,
6-speed tremec, 4:10 gear, Somewhat stealth exhaust, 24"x4" pipes tucked in back, modest. Dropped low, but with good stuff to make it handle like a hot fox body, K-member, tubular components, big sway bars. 18s or 19s not to big but fat,all around. Mostly stock body, tint, no chrome. Full power interior, useful stuff, windows, locks, air. A all around hot rod. But nowone expects how hot it is.

What I would do is go out by yourself a late 80's econoline or F-series with a 351 or up. There injected, trqed out like crazy with no mods, relatively cheap to buy, its all there to swap. Find a beater with new drivetran get even cheaper. See them all the time for 2,3k with all new components with a beat up body. Who needs the body though.

Not bad enough for me, I've down alot of low budget projects. My 1st was putting a 351w into my 76 mustang II, 75 Granada trans(van one to big-mustang one doesn't bolt to a windsor). I was 17 took 5 months, painted it too. Blast to drive, drove it 3 summmers till it used more oil than gas. Still have the car, One of my projects to come.
When I do the Bird I'll fully plan it, probably budget of $12,000 to $15,000.
Till then i have lots of stuff to play with.

Was that stang II fast? Should have been, they're small cars.

Back then yeah, That was the summers of 90,91,92 I believe. Nowing what i know now it would of been faster with just a few things. It was a bone stock 77 moter out of my brothers van. He saved it after scraping the van due to it was rusting to pcs. 132000 miles I believe, 2" whitlock off self exhaust with sonic turbo mufflers. At 1st the pipes exitted in front of the wheels, got pulled over a had to put it out the back thru some stocker 1 1/2 tails. The air cleaner was one of those triangle foam types, the only thing I could keep under the hood. Stock otherwise. I only got beat a few times. early 90s not much was fast. Off the line was its whole game. Torque.

Thats awesome, that stang must have been pretty fast. My friend is going to have his own low budget rocket. He has a 70 torino with cobra front end looks sick. Has a mild powered 302 under the hood. He has to cars in his backyard, ones a late 70's mark 5 or whatever the others a continental. One has a 351M the other has a 460. Hes dissputing either the 351M or 460. either one would make the car fast. I think if he took the M and got the larger crank with 1 inch lift more, he'll have the 400M. The only difference of the 351M and 400M are the cranks. I here lots of good about the M. Whatever he does it will scoot.

I have heard a few good things about the M lately, they were ignored for years because they were a mid 70s thing, and little came from mid 70s that were known for power. Most things I've read were budget builds too. The 460 is probably the better route just because on a budget the 460 will be stronger. The motor in best condition mechanically sound would be the better choice thou. If the W in my II would of been a earlier or even later W. It would of been better. The 77 was one of the weakest. Still scared most people.

Yeah, lol. I hear lots of good things about the M. Theres lots of late model broncos and F-series with the M motor in the 70's. I see all these old mudtrucks with insane trq and power. If the M could move a truck that big and heavy, I could only imagine what it would do in something half the weight. I would luv to find a late 60's Mustang or early like 70/71 Maverick and drop a M under the hood. I see mavericks with 300 hp 302 doing low 13's or in the 12's. My friend has a maverick 1970 with a 302 the door jams say it only ways like 2200 lbs. Mavericks are cheap on top of that.

Go with the 400M set-up. Car Craft did an article on this build in the late '90's I think and it was only about 3,000 tops. Bad ass engine for cheap and reliavble as hell. Can't beat 'em since the 400M's are cheap, cheap, cheap. A real sleeper of an engine!!!

I've seen a 351w in a maverick.... after see that I would say 351M wouldn't fit

Can' t say for sure. I know they have more room than they look. I know the Mustang II in and out, most people laugh. The Pinto is almost the same chassis, so I can take good guesses on that to, the Maverick I've never touched. I think they weigh more like 3200.
